The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Criminal Law Practice. The Custody Notification Service Coordinator (CNS) manages a 24-hour legal advice phone line for Aboriginal people in police custody, overseeing rosters, training and addressing emerging issues. They are also responsible for maintaining manuals, coordinating resources, and handling emergency situations.
- Coordinate with solicitors regarding shift availabilities, changes, and CND advice forms requests.
- Ensure accurate data entry in the CNS App and address police failure to notify CNS.
- Provide internal and external information on CNS operations and respond to family support needs.
- Maintain a criminal practice and appear in court across multiple jurisdictions.
- Train, mentor, and conduct CPD seminars for CNS staff, while fostering professional relationships.
- Stay current on criminal law, policies, and ALS standards, ensuring compliance with organisational values and safety policies.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Strong understanding and respect for Aboriginal cultural and social needs in service delivery.
- Legal qualifications and an NSW Practising Certificate (or ability to obtain one).
- In-depth knowledge of criminal law, practice, and procedure.
- Proven ability to identify legal issues facing disadvantaged Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Skilled in managing CNS rosters, addressing related issues, and maintaining manuals/forms.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, with excellent communication, analytical, and resource management abilities.
