The Opportunity
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, technology-savvy plant professional to join our team in the role of Operations Coordinator (Horticulture)
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a centralized operational ‘core’ of administrative and due diligence services that ensures continuous delivery of highly professional, effective, and efficient operational results.
Working closely with the Curator of the department, the Operations Coordinator will assist with the plant sourcing process and documentation of living collections at the Assiniboine Park and Zoo, along with special projects management within the department.
The Operations Coordinator supports the Senior Director, Horticulture in the short and long-term planning of the living collection to meet strategic goals for display development, education, and conservation; under the guidance of the Strategic Plan, Living Collections Policies, Horticulture Master Plan and other relevant documents.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinates the plant records through inventory, accessioning, de-accessioning, mapping and labeling.
- Assigns accession numbers to plants for the living collections
- Enters data from plant inventory, planting lists, plant removals or deaths into plant records database IrisBG, site maps, and other documentation.
- Verifies plant identity and nomenclature
- With direction from the Senior Director, Horticulture, assists in the design and preparation and delivery of professional research, reporting and presentation
- Assist in the preparation of strategic business plans in conjunction with the Senior Director, Horticulture
- Create confidential financial and statistical processes and prepare a wide range of reports.
- Research and investigate information that provides a foundation from which to enable strategic decision-making by others.
- Responsible for providing support and delivery of a coordinated, centralized approach to maintaining a consistent & efficient flow of operational business requirements
- Analyze and interpret operational financial statistics and other data and produce critical reports that verify and/or prove areas of challenge or of improvement
- Manage, organize and update relevant operational data using database applications
- Adhere to corporate protocols, policies and procedures in relation to day-to-day activities.
- Fully Plans (all function activities) organizes and participates in departmental meetings, conferences, and project team activities.
- Coordinate the meetings of the Horticulture Department and prepare the reports and action plans that result from the meetings.
- Monitor the progress of action plans developed for the Horticulture Department
Required Qualifications:
- University/College Degree in Business Administration or Commerce, alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Horticulture, Botany, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Conservation, Natural Resources, Geographic Information Systems, Landscape Architecture or related field will be considered.
- A combination of Education and Experience may be considered.
- Excellent proficiency with all Microsoft Office programs
- Strong understanding of business practices, and the ability to work quickly, flexibly, effectively, and positively in response to requests made on short notice.
- Ability to identify plants and trees using taxonomic keys.
- Experience using GIS software, global positioning system hardware, and /or experience with survey-grade GPS data collection is considered an asset.
