Electrical Technician (High Voltage Lab)

Annual salary: $64,132 - 69,153

What you'll do

  • Sets up and carries out electrical tests under the supervision of an engineer or technologist.
  • Performs laboratory measurements following established procedures and records the results.
  • Operates computers and test instruments as required for testing. Performs routine repairs, maintenance and calibration of
electrical test equipment, tools and instruments.
  • Builds or modifies test jigs and support structures to be used for electrical tests.
  • Specifies and purchases materials and equipment needed for routine operation of electrical test labs.
  • Maintains test facilities in a safe and organized condition.
  • Maintains log books and files to document tests performed, operating procedures, equipment calibration, etc.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job. This includes the
performance of duties across disciplines in a job of the same or lower job group.

What you bring

Certificate of Technology from an Institute of Technology in Electronics (power/control option), Electrical, Power,
Telecommunications, Instrumentation or Automation disciplines with preference given to the discipline directly relating to the
position or lab.

Two (2) years of related experience working in a lab setting up and performing tests on a variety of electrical equipment,
components and cables.

As the largest test lab on the west coast of North America, the High Voltage lab is capable of conducting distribution-to
transmission-level high-voltage tests on all types of equipment, including transformers, insulators, switchgear, bushings,
cables and accessories, instrument transformers, transmission line hardware, surge arrestors, SF6 insulated equipment,
generators, insulated aerial lift devices, and transformer rectifier units (TRUs). The lab offers a full range of qualification
and certification tests to IEEE, IEC, CSA, ANSI and other international standards, as well as custom testing solutions.
Condition assessment tests may be performed in the field or in the lab to evaluate the equipment condition.

  • Certificate/ Diploma in Electrical Technology discipline is required for this role
  • General technical knowledge in generation, transmission, maintenance, apparatus, civil structures and/or control functions
would be an asset
  • Introductory knowledge of project management
  • Knowledge of substation and/or distribution equipment would be an asset
  • Testing of substation and/or distribution equipment would be an asset
  • Drafting skills would be an asset
  • Experience High Currents, High Power and/or High Voltage is desirable
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis equipment is desirable

  • Must be able to work in confined space
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights > 10 feet
  • Occasional travel across various locations in BC may be required
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the role
