The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

CLSI is now accepting applications for a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE)Technician (Level 1) reporting to the Biological, Chemical, and Occupational Health and Safety Lead. The HSE Technician I assists with the development, maintenance, and implementation of both the CLSI’s chemical/biological safety programs and CLSI’s radiation protection and control program. This is a temporary position with an expected duration of 14-15 months.

Responsibilities:
  • Support projects related to chemical inventory following established guidelines:
    • Migration of SDS inventory to central system
    • Barcoding and updating chemicals at CLS
    • Coordination of hazardous waste disposal
  • Assist safety reviews for beamline proposals including chemical use, including participating in the creation, review and application of Standard Operating Procedures, as well as coordinating experimental set up requirements.
  • Assist with chemical safety needs for CLSI laboratories.
  • Perform radiological surveys for prompt and residual radiation resulting from operation of the CLSI Synchrotron and MIP facilities following procedures
  • Assist with Safety System Validation and Verification testing.
  • May conduct inspections of the CLS Facility for compliance with chemical/biological standards by following established procedures. Assists with radiological and general safety standards; reports non-compliance or hazardous conditions found.
  • Supports the SDS online management system for the CLS Facility as well as the HSE department.
  • Assist with the chemical control program including checking inventory, management and waste disposal following procedures.
  • Other duties and cross-functional support as described in the HSE Chem Tech/Rad Tech/OHS Tech positions.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma and relevant post-secondary diploma/certificate or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some work experience in a relevant field.

Remuneration: This position falls within the scope of the Unifor Local 609 Collective Agreement. Starting salary for this position is $61,818 annually. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, health spending account, life insurance, pension plan, and three weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
