The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLS) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

The Operator monitors our systems to ensure that the accelerator is operating as expected, performs routine operational tasks to support to beam delivery, and provides support to facility users. If you have an interest in supporting science and innovation through your day to day work, this position would give you the opportunity to contribute to research on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatments to cutting-edge electronics.

While prior experience is an asset, extensive training is provided to ensure Operators can safety and effectively perform all duties of the position.

Responsibilities:
  • Start up and operate accelerator systems and associated beamlines following well-defined procedures to deliver beam safely, reliably and timely to scheduled experiments
  • Monitor work related to operations through a centralized control room following procedures and documentation
  • Monitor accelerator systems and respond to alarms to ensure is the beam is operating within expected limits
  • Coordinate technical support for the accelerator and beamlines outside of normal working hours following CLS policies and procedures
  • Provide friendly, safe, and effective after hours support and assistance to facility users
  • Perform safety checks on the experimental floor, including inside laboratories, by checking permits and ensuring facility users are following safety guidelines
  • Collect data from electronic records (e.g. operations logbook, facility data archive) and perform basic analysis within standard guidelines to support troubleshooting team
  • Provide emergency assistance for incidents related to hazardous materials, radiation or fire and smoke incidents; acts as a first responder to emergencies, and records incidents per CLS policies and procedures
  • May be assigned to support other positions on an as-needed basis.
  • Other duties as assigned. In collaboration with the Operator Lead, Operators are encouraged to bring forward ideas for projects that will support ongoing operations and that are of interest to the Operator based on their education/experience and plans for future professional development.
Qualifications:
  • Relevant post-secondary diploma/certificate or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Able to work with minimal supervision

Hours of Work:
This position requires candidates to be available for a rotating shift schedule, based on 24/7 operations. Candidates must have availability 24/7 including on weekends as the shift schedule will vary week to week.
Schedules include shifts of varying length. Most shifts will be 8- or 12-hours (12 hour shifts are 7:00 or 8:00am – 7:00 or 8:00pm and 7:00 or 8:00pm – 7:00 or 8:00am).

Remuneration: This position falls within the scope of the Unifor Local 609 Collective Agreement. Annual Salary is approximately $55,000 to start. Employees will also receive shift differential for non-standard work hours and overtime where applicable.
