The Opportunity
Work in the installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of electrical, electronic, data and HVAC systems, equipment, and fixtures.
Accountabilities
- Install and perform maintenance of electrical equipment and electrical systems, from 120 to 600 volts with various configurations including high leg, on all City owned property such as Administration, Housing, Depot, Landfill, Parks and Recreation, Fire and Pumping Stations.
- Perform installation and maintenance on all electrical equipment such as switchboards, panels, generators, motors, motor starters, variable speed drives and other solid-state controllers including score clocks and sports field lighting and other electrical equipment.
- Perform installation, maintenance, calibration and programming of various mechanical (HVAC) controls such as pneumatic, Direct Digital Control (DDC), other solid state and computerized control systems.
- Perform installation, programming and maintenance on public address, communication and data systems such as COAX, CAT 3, CAT 5, and CAT5E, fiber optic and maintenance management programming and software.
- Operate and function efficiently and effectively with a computerized maintenance management (work order) and energy management systems including log trending, power consumption analysis and costing.
- Conduct code deficiency and life safety inspections on all City owned systems and equipment.

Qualifications
Education – High School Diploma, Certification as an interprovincial Journeyman in the electrical trade in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and be CFC certified in accordance with Provincial Environment regulations.
Specific Skills/Certifications –
- Good working knowledge of Electrical and Mechanical (HVAC) principles, relevant computerized management software and systems and have a good understanding of both the latest Canadian Electrical Code and the latest Mechanical Refrigeration and Safety Codes and must be capable of performing under direction of the Supervisor installations & maintenance for both electrical and mechanical (HVAC) equipment and systems such as pneumatic, and solid state computerized systems.
- Power Line Hazards Certification.
- CFC Certification.
Relevant Experience –
- Five (5) years’ experience working in a position requiring an interprovincial Journeyman Electrician certification.
Other –
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Willing to take upgrading courses, in order to keep up with the latest technology that may be installed in City facilities.
Working Conditions
This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.
Hours of Work
Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (40 hours per week)
