Production Geologist

The Opportunity:

Are you a well-rounded geologist who understands the changing depositional environments in the McMurray, as well as changes in ore body composition? We are hiring for a Geologist with strong technical and communication skills to join our Horizon Production Geology team! In this role, you will support daily field operations by ensuring safe, compliant, and effective delivery of ore to the plant and support the improvement of the geological modelling effort.

• Job location: Horizon Site – Fort McMurray, Alberta 
• Shift schedule: 7 x 7, 12-hour shift

Key Accountabilities:

• Work as an integral member of the production geology group involved with the day-to-day operations of the active mine
• Help drive the mine plan by ensuring effective delivery of optimal ore feed to the plant
• Perform daily field investigations of the changing excavation faces, validating the geological model, and reviewing the mine plan in action
• Track and analyze mine data to improve the geology modelling and execution
• Optimize and adjust mining benches based on geologic interpretations
• Ensure effective communication of real time geologic conditions, properties and hazards with various stakeholders including Geology, Mine Engineering, Mine Operations, and Plant Engineering
• Support geophysical logging, pit sampling, model interpretations and daily material reconciliation

What You Bring to the Role:

• A Geology degree from a recognized institution and registered or eligible to register with APEGA as P.Geo.   
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in geology
• Must possess a valid class 5 Drivers' License with a clean record 
• (Driving is a critical task and therefore must have years of driving experience)  
• Highly motivated individual with good communication and positive attitude
• Experienced in MS Office, MinePlan (Minesight) and Petrel will be an asset
• Knowledge of the McMurray Formation and/or previous mining experience will be an asset
