The Role
We are seeking a Hydro Operator Intern to join our Operations team for a 4-month term (May to August 2025). This is an exciting opportunity for a student looking to complete a co-op placement or summer internship and gain hands-on experience at an operating hydroelectric facility!
The position will be based out of one of our facilities in British Columbia with the opportunity for travel to other site locations for 1-2 weeks at a time. The base location is flexible and temporary relocation assistance may be available, pending eligibility. Site locations include:
- Bear Creek Hydro Facility near Sechelt, BC
- Long Lake Hydro Facility near Stewart, BC
- Trio Creek Hydro Facility near Harrison Lake, BC
Reporting to the Lead Operator, you will work closely with and learn from a group of highly skilled and multidisciplinary operators while contributing to the delivery of green energy to the provincial transmission grid. What do we offer a Hydro Operator Intern?
Through regular site visits, you will develop skills and knowledge related to the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the operating hydroelectric facility. You will receive all required training and support to ensure a safe, productive and impactful learning experience. As a Hydro Operator Intern, you will:
- Work with the Site Operations Team to optimize generation, while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Respond, as part of the team, to any alarms or incidents that may occur at the facility.
- Assist with the regular maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting and repairs of equipment on-site (e.g. mechanical or electrical systems and/or vehicles and other equipment used on site).
- Assist in the maintenance and organization of various reports and procedures (e.g. operation, production, procedures, safety plans, training, and maintenance records).
- Assist any contractors or subtrades hired to do work at the facilities during planned and unplanned maintenance tasks.
- Assist with procurement, pickup and delivery of components required for the facility operations.
- Maintain roadways onsite, including snow removal, brushing, grading ditching, and culvert maintenance.
- Maintain buildings and grounds, including vegetation control, brush control and landscaping.
- Keep the facility safe, clean, and presentable at all times.
- Conduct oneself in a manner that maintains the Owner’s good standing with the public, government authorities, First Nations, and all other stakeholders.
What You Bring
- Education: You are currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from a college or university program with a focus on engineering, skilled trades and/or a related field (e.g. electrician, millwrighting, instrumentation, power and controls, etc.).
- Key Skills: You are able to read electrical, mechanical, or civil schematics and possess an analytic mindset for troubleshooting industrial type applications. You are comfortable with technology and computers and are proficient with Microsoft Office based programs (e.g. Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, etc.). You must be physically able to carry out the tasks associated with the role, including lifting up to 80lbs.You are a reliable self-starter with a willingness to learn and work as a contributing team member.
- Health & Safety: You are comfortable working with a small team in remote wilderness settings; you possess or are willing to acquire all required safety training (e.g. first aid, boat safety, wildlife avoidance and outdoor survival skills, etc.).
- Other Requirements: You must be able to live and work near Sechelt, Stewart or Harrison Lake, BC and possess a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license, with a clean abstract. Availability for on-call responses to site, as part of a 3-person team is required. Candidates based out of Stewart, BC must possess a valid passport and/or necessary visa entry documentation to travel to the US, as travel between Canada and the US is required for this location.
