Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:
The British Government’s Consulate-General in Toronto has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and detail oriented person to join our busy Consular Team. Reporting to the Consular Manager in Toronto the successful applicant will provide consular administrative assistance in accordance with current guidelines. This will include organising and delivering citizenship ceremonies, providing remote admin support to colleagues in Vancouver and processing travel documents. The successful applicant will also respond to routine enquires that come into the consular team.
This opportunity is a rewarding role which supports and further develops the relationship between the UK and Canada, working at the forefront of supporting our priority in assisting British Nationals.
The ideal candidate will be an active member of the Americas Consular Network requiring the person to be a team player, an effective communicator both written and oral, exceptional attention to detail, sound judgement and common sense, ability to remain calm under pressure and to be able to quickly shift focus between case types.
Roles and responsibilities:
Management and processing of emergency travel document applications.
Arranging Citizenship Ceremonies
Data entry onto the case management application.
Providing remote Citizenship Ceremony assistance to the Consulate in Vancouver
Keeping the Consular Manager informed of developments in cases.
There may be the opportunity to provide consular assistance in accordance with current policies.
This is a seasonal position lasting up to 3 months.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Essential on arrival:
3 years of relevant work experience including working with the public.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate at all levels.
Ability to handle personal issues/information and deal with staff and clients in a friendly, non judgemental and sensitive manner
Ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple tasks.
Proficiency in the Microsoft office suite is required.
A valid driving license and willingness to use your personal vehicle for officials duties (with expenses reimbursed).
Language requirements:
Language: English
Level of language required: Fluent with excellent written English

A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language and geography

Working patterns:
Working hours per week - 25
Monday to Friday - 08:00 – 13:00
Some flexible working may be accommodated however this role requires attendance in the office to provide in-person support to British nationals.

Mandatory training courses as required for role.
Additional information
Must have the legal status to live and work in Canada. Applicant is expected to appear in person for approximately 60% of week but working from home is permitted and encouraged when realistic to do so.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
