The Kananaskis Region stretches from east of Calgary to the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Over 50 parks and recreation areas provide outdoor adventures and protected wildlife habitat. Role Responsibilities

Emergency Communication Technicians fill a dynamic role within a highly specialized remote communications and intelligence hub as the primary point of coordination for incident processing, resource mobilization, communications and documentation during emergency and non-emergency calls throughout the front country and backcountry areas of over 25,000 sq km land base of the Kananaskis Region.

We are looking to fill two summer seasonal positions to work in our Kananaskis Emergency Services office.

Duties include simultaneous monitoring of multiple phone lines and radio channels as well as operation of a variety of communications equipment including a multi-screen computer terminal and various software, printer, mapping software, advanced telephone system, GPS unit, IPad and voice recorder.

Throughout any occurrence, whether it be a wildlife complaint, natural disaster or mass casualty incident, the Emergency Communication Officer is the primary resource for communications between numerous response agencies: Kananaskis Country Mountain Rescue Team, Conservation Officers, Helicopter Rescue units, RCMP, EMS agencies, Provincial Flight Coordination Centers, Search and Rescue groups, Fire Departments and numerous non-emergency agencies.

Emergency Communication Technicians manage multiple responses and incidents simultaneously, triaging priority calls based on available resources and immediate threats to life safety. Reporting to the Emergency Services Dispatch Supervisor, this position is responsible for key emergency communications centre files and programs. These include dispatch and radio communications program (training, licensing, and trends analysis),communications technologies & asset management, and stakeholder support.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma and two years of related administrative experience

Other Requirements that are mandatory:
  • Standard First aid with CPR-C and AED. Preference may be given to candidates having an 80-hour Wilderness First Aid Certificate
  • Class 5 Driver’s License, or equivalent
  • Able to work irregular hours, overtime, shifts, evenings and/or weekends, and/or statutory and provincial holidays
  • Able to work independently without direct supervision, with initiative to remain productive and support other park programs when needed

Assets:
  • Previous Dispatch experience with Emergency Services including International Academics of Emergency Dispatchers (IAED) Certification or similar
  • Previous experience in Emergency Services including EMS, Fire and Public Safety
  • Industry Canada- Restricted Radio Operators License-Aeronautical Certification
  • Enhanced RCMP security clearance for use of enforcement applications
  • Technical abilities in radio communications systems and equipment
  • High level of computer proficiency including typing speed and abilities with Microsoft Office products
  • Basic Emergency Management Certificate
  • Incident Command System (ICS) training

Notes

Terms of Employment:

  • This is a seasonal wage position from May until mid-September
  • Shifts range from 10:00 AM – 20:00 PM
  • Shifts are 10 hours in length based on up to a 40 hour work week
  • Successful candidates may be kept on past the end of the term as Wage Staff
  • Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening
  • There is no provision for this position to work from home
