We are currently looking to hire permanent and casual wage meat inspectors in various locations across Alberta.
As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing slaughter inspection services on kill floors at provincial abattoirs.
Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include:
pre-operation inspection
ante and post-mortem examination of animals
completion of time reporting and;
relevant inspection documentation
This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS).
The Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for providing regulatory inspection service to approximately 120 licensed red meat and poultry abattoirs across Alberta.

Qualifications
Technologies 4 Meat Inspector
Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, and a minimum of two (2) years of directly related meat inspection work experience (i.e. working as a meat inspector on kill floors). Experience as a meat inspector within the Canadian federal or provincial systems required.
Equivalencies considered - directly related Canadian meat inspector experience considered on the basis of 1 year of meat inspector experience for 1 year of education.
Meat inspection experience may not be substituted with other education or experience.
Additional Assets to be successful in the role:
Knowledge of animal diseases and pathology
Requirements for humane livestock handling and stunning
Food safety principles for slaughter and meat processing
Familiarity with and ability to interpret regulatory standards (e.g. Meat Inspection Act (AB), Meat Inspection Regulation (AB), and Meat Facility Standards)
Proficiency using computer technology and applications (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel) is a must
Robust competencies in communication and conflict resolution (e.g. Verbal Judo) are an asset
Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required
The successful candidate must successfully complete all in-house training.

Candidates that do not meet Technologies 4 qualifications may be offered a Technologies 3 classification.

$2,302.69 to $3,015.79 bi-weekly
$31.76 to $41.60 per hour
Developmental Meat Inspector (Technologies 3):
$53,273 to 68,810 per year
$2,041.12 to $2,636.42 bi-weekly
$28.15 to $36.36 per hour
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time)
Work schedule runs Monday to Friday
Extended working hours (overtime) and/or travel will be required to complete assigned field work
Overtime rate will be applicable for all overtime
Ability to work under varying site conditions including inclement weather conditions and wet surface areas/environments
PPE will be provided
In house training will be provided
Successful candidate may be initially placed in the Edmonton, Grande Prairie, La Crete, Vermilion, Airdrie or Lethbridge region. Please indicate your preferred region(s) when submitting your application.
Any relocation costs pertaining to the initial area of placement are the responsibility of the successful candidate
Candidate must reside within the geographical boundaries of the assigned regional work area and within a reasonable distance from their assigned office
Office is located in the geographical region where the successful candidate will reside
Candidate may be required to travel to other geographical regions for training and/or cover off for other regions
Candidate may be required to relocate to a different geographical region than placed if future operational requirements require
