  • Occasional travel within the region when required. (Expenses covered as per the GNB Travel policy)

Facts and Myths about the court stenographer role:
Myth: You need to transcribe during a hearing, and type everything in shorthand.
Fact: You do not transcribe while court is in session (no transcribing in real-time), and you do not need to know shorthand (it's not like the movies anymore!). Only a regular keyboard is used, and you are not tested on words per minute.

Myth: All stenographers work every weekend.
Fact: Weekend remand court runs every Saturday and Sunday (and Statutory holidays), on a rotational basis in only one (1) of eight (8) judicial districts across the province. Two (2) stenographers are paid overtime for the hours worked during weekend. These shifts are filled on a volunteer basis.

Myth: A court stenographer is in court all day everyday with no flexibility and works routinely after hours.
Fact: There is a good mix of office work and court sitting days. A court stenographer is not always in court every day each week. There are days when court might sit longer than usual, however we work as a team and one stenographer may replace another when needed.
