The Opportunity
The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety is seeking a highly motivated and independent Mines Inspector to provide regulatory direction and enforcement of occupational health and safety within the Saskatchewan mining industry. The role of the Mines Inspector is to promote and enforce the requirements of The Saskatchewan Employment Act, The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020, and The Mines Regulations, 2018.
In this role, you will also be responsible to:
- Carry out inspections and targeted interventions of mining operations, chemical processing facilities, exploration sites, refineries and power plants throughout the province with the intent of securing the safety and health of workers;
- Develop techniques to monitor the programs, development of methods to detect mining health hazards and development of regulatory policies for these hazards;
- Conduct follow up inspections to support investigations;
- Support new safety standards at the mines through findings and recommendations;
- Interact with senior mining and worker representatives, and occupational health committees;
- Review technical drawings and specifications to support regulatory compliance;
- Advise the Chief Mines Inspector on matters relating to trends, permits, approvals and certificates; and
- Deliver the mine rescue certification process at assigned sites.
Ideal Candidate
This position will be of particular interest to an individual with several years of relevant industry experience who is looking for a challenging role with non-traditional hours, the ability to travel throughout the province and flexibility in how they schedule their hours and days of work.
The ideal candidate will also possess:
- Strong understanding of scientific and technological areas such as mineral processing, mining methods, refinery operations, rock mineralogy, electrical safety principles, and ground control in underground and surface mines;
- Knowledge of mining and processing methods, drilling operations, blasting, rock properties and physical methods of evaluating rock properties, electrical and mechanical systems;
- Knowledge of mine, mill and facility operations and safety systems;
- In-depth knowledge of underground mine and surface emergency preparedness, response and rescue processes;
- Ability to understand and apply relevant legislation, codes and specific mining regulations and safe mining practices;
- Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions and in providing recommendations;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to support and clarify technical information within the mining industry;
- Exemplary interpersonal skills in order to develop relationships at all organizational levels; and
- Ability to motivate people towards better health and safety practices in the mining and petrochemical industry.
The knowledge, skills and abilities needed to qualify for this position are attained through the completion of an undergraduate science degree, and professional engineer or professional geoscientist designation. Experience in mining operations and / or mineral processing is also a requirement. Preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds in mining engineering, geological engineering, mining geology, metallurgy, mineral processing or chemical engineering . A valid class 5 driver’s license is required.

Please note: there will be a 14% salary supplement provided for those with a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscience designation.
The salary for this position will be updated to reflect compensation adjustments for out-of-scope employees once updates in the HR system are completed. Compensation adjustments include wage increases of 3% for April 2023, 3% for April 2024 and 1.67% for April 2025 as well as a 3.41% class plan renewal adjustment effective November 1, 2024.
