ABOUT PAULATUK COMMUNITY CORPORATION (PCC)
Under the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA), each Inuvialuit community—including Aklavik, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tuktoyaktuk, and Ulukhaktok—has a Community Corporation. These corporations are governed by six elected Directors and one elected Chair and serve as a critical link between community members and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC).
The Paulatuk Community Corporation represents the residents of Paulatuk (Paulatuuq), meaning “place where one finds soot of coal,” a community of approximately 300 people located near Tuktut Nogait National Park and the Horton River. Known as the Southwind Capital of the Arctic, Paulatuk is historically significant and rich in natural beauty, with the Smoking Hills—sulfur-rich lignite deposits that have burned continuously for centuries—adding to its unique cultural landscape.
While hunting and trapping remain integral to the community’s way of life, the region holds potential for future mineral resource development.
