Job Summary:
Kidz Can Play Inc. has been providing quality sports and recreational programs in the Toronto area since 2015 and has recently expanded to the Newmarket/Sharon area. We are excited to develop a more competitively skilled basketball program to complement our existing offerings, which emphasize fundamental skills and positive experiences. Our programs serve children from Senior Kindergarten through Grade 8. The program will take place at Meadowbrook P.S. in Newmarket from 6-7pm, or 6-8pm, depending on programming needs.
We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Basketball Program Coaches to lead and develop basketball programs for children in three age groups: Senior Kindergarten & Grade 1, Grades 2-4, and Grades 5-8. The ideal candidate will have a passion for coaching, experience working with children, and the ability to create a fun and engaging learning environment while focusing on skill development and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Planning and Execution:
- Develop and implement age-appropriate basketball drills, practices, and activities.
- Teach basketball fundamentals, including dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, and game strategy.
- Incorporate teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership principles into coaching sessions.
Player Development:
- Assess and monitor players’ skill levels and provide constructive feedback.
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages growth and confidence.
- Adapt coaching methods to meet the individual needs and abilities of participants.
Program Leadership:
- Lead practices, games, and tournaments (as applicable) with professionalism and enthusiasm.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during sessions.
- Communicate effectively with parents, players, and other staff about schedules, goals, and player progress.
Administrative Duties:
- Track attendance and maintain accurate records.
- Assist in program setup, teardown, and equipment management.
- Provide feedback to the Program Directors to enhance program quality.
- Under direction from the Program Instructor, assists with the instruction of the program. According to a specific plan, will assist with specific activities while creating a fun, safe and positive learning environment.
- Ensures all program participants are aware of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations
- Provides feedback to the Program Instructor on program changes and improvements
- Refers any program decisions to the Directors
- Advises Directors of any customer service issues, complaints, or inquiries
- Checks and ensures all participant emergency and medical information is accurate on the class list
- Ensures safety at ALL times, enforcing safety regulations
- Assists the Program Instructor with set up and clean up of all equipment and supplies
- Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants
Qualifications:
Required:
- Experience coaching basketball, preferably with children or youth.
- Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and engage children in a supportive and fun environment.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Availability to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred:
- Experience in youth sports program coordination or teaching.
- Certification in coaching (e.g., NCCP or equivalent) is an asset.
- Knowledge of child development and learning techniques.
