Our Investigations, Monitoring and Enforcement group (“IME”) is seeking a permanent full-time Staff Lawyer. In keeping with the Law Society’s mandate to protect the public interest, IME Staff Lawyers conduct investigations into serious conduct issues, including the misuse of a trust account, improper handling of trust funds or other accounting rule breaches, misleading conduct, conflicts of interest or a failure to make inquiries in the face of suspicious circumstances.

The responsibilities of the IME Staff Lawyer include:

  • Conducting fair, proportionate and timely investigations by gathering and assessing evidence, independently and as part of a team;
  • Conducting interviews of complainants, subject lawyers, and witnesses;
  • Exercising sound judgment in file handling and in assessing complaints to determine whether further action is necessary by the Law Society;
  • Preparing clear and concise assessment letters for files closed with no further action;
  • Preparing detailed opinions for the Discipline Committee’s consideration and presenting those opinions; and
  • Other duties as the Deputy Chief Legal Officer may require.

Qualifications

  • Practicing membership with the Law Society of BC, or eligibility for membership, with a minimum of 5 years of practice experience
  • Superior investigatory, interviewing, and communication skills
  • Excellent legal writing and analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to handle complex, document intensive files
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the team

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position. The salary range is $133,403.30 to $161,653.86.
