About the role
The Maintenance Assistant will provide full-time assistance to the Maintenance Custodian to support maintenance services at the ELCC Culture & Language Camp in Burk’s Falls, Ontario.
The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for supporting the daily cleaning and general maintenance of the camp buildings (internally & externally) and the grounds. They will be expected to monitor the camp environment and perform minor plumbing and handyman repairs (drywall, painting, limited carpentry, fixtures replacement) and groundwork such as snow shoveling and seasonal landscaping.
What you will be doing

  • Support building maintenance and perform minor maintenance in areas as needed. This includes cleaning buildings (internally & externally), conducting necessary repairs and logging maintenance work completed.
  • Notify the Maintenance Custodian of preventative maintenance or need for repairs to the camp’s buildings or grounds.
  • Responsible for supporting the management of the on-site water system. Must be willing to obtain valid/current Ministry of Health certification and maintain this certification as a condition of employment and any additional certification or training identified by the Facilities Manager to be necessary for camp operation.
  • Support the Maintenance Custodian in ensuring all building septic systems are operating correctly and serviced as required to maintain proper operation.
  • Pest control and management of services.
  • Receive deliveries to camp property.
  • Build positive relations and communications internally and externally to support the maintenance of the camp.
  • Perform a thorough annual deep clean of all buildings.
  • Perform snow clearing, shovelling and salting to maintain the exterior at acceptable safety levels throughout the winter. Perform grass cutting/landscaping in the warmer months.
  • On-call work is required when the Maintenance Custodian is unavailable – required to live onsite during this time to monitor camp systems and respond to issues reported outside of the standard work day.
  • Willing to work overtime on holidays and weekends as required.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Facilities Manager or designate(s).

Qualifications

  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Completion of High School Diploma
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to assess situations and notify Maintenance Custodian
  • Ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
  • Comfortable working with computer, smartphone technology and applications
  • Experience with maintenance repairs and groundwork
  • Small water system certification (specific certification to be noted)
  • Experience working safely with cleaning and other chemicals used in building operations
  • Ability to be flexible and self-motivated and to take initiative
  • Must reside within driving distance of Burk’s Falls

Preferred

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability and willingness to acquire and expand knowledge quickly and to be flexible in the camp environment
  • Experience performing Property Maintenance is an asset
  • Knowledge of commercial-level septic systems is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code is an asset
  • Knowledge of Ontario Health and Safety Act is an asset
  • Knowledge of AODA is an asset
  • Bilingualism is an asset

All positions at the MNO may require the following:

  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain
  • Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Verification
  • A reliable vehicle (or ability to rent), driver’s license, $1,000,000 liability insurance, and a clean driving record
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as necessary
  • Must meet vaccination requirements as set out in the MNO Vaccination Policy & Procedures
