Do you have legal administrative experience? Do you have the ability to stay organized in a high volume environment with tight deadlines? If so, bring your knowledge and expertise to the Ministry of the Attorney General, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, where you will provide law clerk support services by assisting counsel and management members of the branch.

NOTE:
  • This position is required to report to and work from the physical work location three days per week.
  • Current hybrid work arrangements are subject to change.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position, you will:
  • prepare prosecution appeal materials: appeal books, case books, factums and notices
  • draft notices of motion and motion records, affidavits, letters, memoranda and statistical reports
  • serve documents on appropriate parties, file documents at court offices and arrange court dates
  • ensure that Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development staff are advised of court dates and times for proceedings as necessary
  • provide Director, Deputy Directors, and client ministry with data, statistical reports and other required information
  • assist management in providing information for the implementation and maintenance of the office case management system and caselaw and factum precedent databases
  • conduct legal research on internet databases and in law libraries for reported and unreported cases, publications and textbooks, as required
  • review and be familiar with legislation, regulations and case law pertinent to the work of the branch
  • conduct analysis of existing branch work systems and develop and recommend procedures to support branch objectives


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • Typing to 50 wpm


Legal Knowledge:

You have knowledge of:
  • court and tribunal procedures and rules and their functions
  • legal terminology and documents relating to prosecutions, Provincial Offences Act appeals, and appeals before the Ontario Labour Relations Board
  • legal principles, practices and legal office administration
  • the use of case management systems


Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

You can:
  • interact with the members of legal profession, the public, all levels of government and court administration official
  • relay instructions from lawyer to client and vice versa, and explain legal procedures and documents
  • act in a courteous and tactful manner when conveying sensitive information
  • prepare a variety of legal documents such as: affidavits, notices of motion and letters to defendants and legal counsel


Organizational and Coordination Skills:

You can:
  • prioritize a large volume of cases and to prepare and maintain a case management database
  • document and manage large and intensive cases


Research and Analytical Skills:

You can:
  • research and locate relevant case law and applicable statutes for inclusion in legal documents
  • conduct analysis of existing branch work systems and develop and recommend procedures to support branch objectives


Other Essential Skills:

  • You have computer skills to develop spreadsheets, graphs, reports and correspondences in Excel, Adobe and Powerpoint
