National Steel Car Ltd is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Health and Safety to lead our health and safety initiatives in our manufacturing environment. The Director will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive health and safety programs to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, promote a safe working environment, and minimize occupational hazards.
Key Responsibilities:
· Develop and execute strategic plans to promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.
· Provide leadership and direction to the health and safety team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
· Stay abreast of relevant health and safety regulations and ensure compliance with provincial, federal, and industry-specific standards.
· Interpret legislative requirements and develop policies and procedures to ensure adherence.
· Identify potential health and safety hazards in the workplace and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
· Conduct regular inspections and audits to assess compliance and identify areas for improvement.
· Develop and deliver health and safety training programs for employees at all levels.
· Promote awareness of health and safety policies and procedures through ongoing communication and training initiatives.
· Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
· Prepare and submit incident reports as required by regulatory agencies.
· Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures to address potential emergencies such as fires, chemical spills, or natural disasters.
· Conduct drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of emergency response plans.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, human resources, and facilities management, to integrate health and safety into all aspects of the business.
· Communicate regularly with employees, managers, and executives to promote a culture of safety and accountability.
Qualifications:·
· Extensive, progressive experience in the human resources field with a specialization in the areas of Occupational Health, Safety and Workers’ Compensation/Disability Management. Preferably within a large and/or complex unionized public or private sector organization, applying Ontario legislation.
· Minimum of 8 years of managerial experience preferably in a manufacturing environment.
· Achieved CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CHSC (Certified Health & Safety Consultant) designation, or currently pursuing certification.
· Considerable experience leading, developing, mentoring and engaging teams to deliver strong program outcomes, while fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
· Excellent knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations, Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, collective agreements and human resource policies and practices.
· Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify needs, options, and opportunities for change/improvement and recommend solutions on related issues.
· Highly developed interpersonal, communication skills and presentation skills in order to interact effectively at all levels in the organization.
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
