Warehouse Relief Worker

Are you skilled in organization and evaluation? The Mustard Seed is seeking a Warehouse Relief Worker to provide outstanding customer service and handle sales transactions.

The Warehouse Assistant will assist the Thrift Store team by receiving incoming donations, screening them for product quality, and putting them on the sales floor. The position will also pick up donations and deliver orders to other Mustard Seed locations. This role may also provide coverage in the Thrift Store, delivering customer service and processing sales. As this position interacts directly with donors and volunteers, the Warehouse Relief Worker is responsible for providing a positive experience for all who visit The Mustard Seed.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in receiving and processing donated items by unloading, sorting, packing, storing, bailing and pricing as per directions and standards.
• Pick up and deliver goods between donor locations and Mustard Seed facilities.
• Receive incoming donations, screening and sorting items according to quality standards and with reference to program & thrift store needs.
• Count, weigh, and record incoming donations.
• Ensure the Thrift Store and Warehouse are a safe environment for staff, volunteers, and customers by following the organization’s health and safety policy and procedures.
• Monitor retail layout and display with frequent walks throughout the shop daily to maintain organization and cleanliness, color blocking, and regular updating of floor displays to attract customers to the store.
• Keep stock rotated as per schedule or as directed by the Thrift Store Manager.
• Provide a high level of customer service through sales assistance, answering and returning phone calls, helping to load items into vehicles for customers as needed, and processing sales transactions.
• Contribute to a positive workplace culture.
• Communicate the story of The Mustard Seed’s ministry and develop rapport, through intentional interactions with volunteers and donors.
• Lifts and relocate bags and boxes to determined areas as required. Assists with heavy lifting as required.
• Separates recycling and garbage, and processes both according to the direction given, including into truck for removal.
• Participate in all staff training (e.g., First Aid, Safe TALK, NCVI) and attend staff meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a retail sales or customer service role.
• Physically fit and able to handle regular loading and unloading of truck for deliveries.
• Good driving record and experience.
• A valid Class 5 Drivers License with clean Drivers Abstract.
• Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills.
• Self motivated and ability to work independently and within a team.
• Basic understanding of computers and Microsoft Office programs.
• Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Ability to continuously lift up to 50 lbs.
• Navigating interactions with challenging clients who may exhibit unpredictable behavior, including swearing, anger, and the possibility of becoming aggressive.
• Working environment will include indoor and outdoor activities.
• Fast-paced environment.
• This position requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve.
• The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and daily interactions with colleagues, community participants and donors.
• Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
  • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.  
• This position requires the use of a company vehicle. Candidate must have and maintain valid driver’s license and will need to consent to a driver’s abstract request.
