Recruitment range: $61,154- $67,421 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $79,510 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, the Communications, Events and Community Engagement Coordinator will develop, implement and evaluate marketing strategies, campaigns, content and events that will engage Faculties, staff, students, industrial partners and alumni from the Department of Chemistry. The goal is for the Department to maintain a significant social media footprint and to provide a series of events and communication initiatives that will promote a healthy and inclusive environment in the Department.

This position will work closely with the Faculty of Science to support overall communications, outreach and engagement initiatives across the Faculty. This includes event management and marketing, communications planning, media relations, planning and creating a range of marketing and communications material (e.g., regular publication of departmental newsletters, student and employer profiles, material for recruitment, large-scale promotional material), social media, video content for courses, social and web, website content creation and management, issues communications, and providing advice and guidance to Chemistry Faculty, students and staff, as necessary, for internal communications and event coordination. The position will support all external relation initiatives, including coordination of community partners for CHEM 405/505, helping researchers to establish industrial collaborations and supporting both the graduate student committee (GSC) and the publicity and undergraduate recruitment committee (PURC) with recruitment initiatives and events. The position works closely with University Communications and Marketing (UC M) to identify and create content that aligns with the university’s strategic priorities to ensure the broad promotion and consistent usage of the UVic Chemistry branding and UVic brand guidelines across campus and online.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Proposing, developing, implementing and assessing digital and print media communication and marketing material and campaigns;
  • Coordinating Departmental events from initial planning stages through completion;
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of marketing tools, events and campaigns.
  • Help with departmental fundraising and outreach initiatives.
  • Support researchers, students and staff with activities involving interaction with external partners, including courses, industrial collaborations and community engagement initiatives.
  • Support courses and other internal initiatives that require the generation of media content (videos, websites and so on).


This position will support programs, initiatives and events that may take place in the evenings or on the weekends and requires the ability and willingness to work these hours as required.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will have experience in marketing or a communications-related field. A science-related background, particularly in chemistry, would be a very strong asset.

At least two years of related work experience is required, including:

  • Experience in project and event management, public relations and/or marketing;
  • Experience managing, developing and implementing virtual and in-person events;
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating communications plans and materials;
  • Experience copywriting for both print and web, experience with web content management, and fundamentals of good photography, web and video content;
  • Graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator), website content management systems, and advanced proficiency with Microsoft suite of products.


Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • Knowledge of creative planning, conceptual thinking, visual conceptualization, with ability to apply that knowledge to communication and events projects;
  • Knowledge of communications and events project management, project planning, client communication, print collateral, publications and electronic media;
  • Understanding of the principles of good design in print and multimedia materials and how to work effectively within established organizational design structures;
  • Website management and social media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram etc.) and how each platform can be optimally deployed in different scenarios;
  • Understanding of and experience with identifying, creating and reporting on web metrics, including web accessibility standards and SEO;
  • Understanding of and experience with the creative aspect of branding, along with proven success in implementing brand standards and messaging;


An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

In addition, the position requires the following abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, make decisions independently, be self-motivated and consistently meet deadlines;
  • Work and communicate effectively orally and in writing, with tact and diplomacy, with a variety of internal and external contacts;
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills;
  • Excellent team building skills with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team;
  • Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural, communication, public relations, and networking skills;
  • Knowledge and awareness of equity, diversity and inclusion considerations and practices as they relate to communications materials and event delivery;
  • Ability to synthesize and share information, so that each team member has the necessary information they need to perform their duties, and understands their role within the project and how it contributes to project success;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, multi-task and prioritize;
  • Ability to work with team and campus partners using diplomacy and tact to navigate difficult and confidential matters;
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Proven track record achieving project goals on time and produce deliverables of a high quality.
