Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Vale Health and Safety team is a vital part of the Voisey’s Bay Team. Together, we monitor, check, and continually improve our health and safety systems to create an environment where we can all successfully achieve zero harm and go HomeSafe.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home. 

We are currently seeking an Industrial Hygiene Advisor to join our Health, Safety, and Risk department in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation. 

The Industrial Hygiene Advisor will coordinate and response to industrial hygiene issues in the mines/plants including occupational exposures, health risk assessments ergonomics programs to ensure departmental compliance to relevant legislation, corporate Guidelines, divisional programs and SPIs. The advisor develops the sampling schedule and ensures that industrial hygiene programs are developed and operated at a high technical standard. The advisor will also be assigned projects to reduce the workplace exposures and improve the operational performance against, TSM, Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and Health and Safety management system objectives.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

• Demonstrate safe and healthy behavior as well as a concern for environmental stewardship;
• Conduct inspections and follow-up with corrective actions;
• Assist in the development of standards and operating procedures for the industrial hygiene program and participate in risk assessments and process hazard analysis;
• Develop annual plans and conduct sampling to ensure compliance with both government regulations and company standards, such as: Vale standards and regulatory requirements, OEMP, health-based risk assessments, hearing conservation program, hazardous materials program, radiation and ventilation programs;
• Understand department budget to control and reduce costs where possible for activities within area of responsibility; Develop higher health-based studies – train and coordinate IH training in specialized activities;
• Prepare occupational health training packages for employees and verify IH workgroup data systems and processes to ensure a high level of integrity;
• Identify opportunities to reduce workplace exposures, improve workplace controls and performance against GRI, TSM and Health and Safety Management System objectives;
• Act as a resource person to peers, health care specialists, and assist colleagues as required;
• Communicate relevant health information to Occupational Health and Safety Committees, OH&S officers, operating departments, and corporate offices and maintain good working relations with management and plant personnel;
• Provide audits on processes and equipment to ensure reliability and effective use;
• Ensure that equipment is available to meet the sampling requirements, select specialized equipment for complex industrial hygiene investigations.

About You

Education

• Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline.
• Registered Occupation Hygienist (ROH) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is considered an asset.

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience.
• Experience working in a mining environment would be considered an asset.
• Understanding of relevant Health and Safety Regulations, Company standards, policies and procedures; First Aid, CPR.
• In-depth understanding of operation processes.
