POSITION OVERVIEW

The Summer Camp Outreach Lead is responsible for supporting the social inclusion of Summer Day Camp program participants (ages 5 to 13). This includes provision of quality, fun, inclusive and safe care of all campers.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Delivery

  • Assist with in-take interviews with participants and their families/guardians.
  • Responsible for following a schedule of supporting children as assigned.
  • Actively participate in scheduled outings, swimming, gym, classroom and outdoor time.
  • Spend time with children that require additional social inclusion support.
  • Provide 1:1 support for campers as needed.
  • Identify barriers to full camper participation and work with team to find solutions.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in relation to providing social inclusion support.
  • Ensure that all strategies, which are implemented, are compatible with all YMCA programs/polices.
  • Collaboration with fellow YMCA staff members.
  • Model appropriate interactions/participation with peers.
  • Perform in a fast-paced environment with confidence, maturity, and enthusiasm.
  • Develop a healthy rapport with children, their families, and the public, maintaining open communication.
  • Inform the Camp Leadership Team of any program changes, problems, and/ or concerns immediately
  • Assists to ensure a safe and secure program environment for all.

Safety of Participants

  • Adherence to the YMCA Child Protection Policies and Procedures ensuring a safe environment for children/young people, and vulnerable persons; taking appropriate action when necessary.
  • Ensure YMCA ‘SAM’ and Brand Standards are met and exceeded, maintaining neat, tidy, and safe camp program spaces and equipment at all times.
  • Read and Sign off on the YMCA Staff and Volunteer Guide and the Child Protection Policy and Procedures document.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and YMCA training events.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Student entering or continuing full time post secondary studies.
  • Preferred qualification of enrolment in an undergraduate university degree or college diploma in a relevant field of study such as Therapeutic Recreation, Child and Youth Studies, Psychology, Education, Social Work, Kinesiology- and/or equivalent level of training & work experience with children and youth
  • Minimum 1-2 years related experience volunteering or working with children and youth
  • Previous training and/or experience in implementing behavior management strategies considered an asset.
  • Uses a person-centered approach, is trauma informed and responsive.
  • Have demonstrated interest and knowledge of working with newcomer children and children who have additional needs
  • Be able to effectively provide support to newcomer children and children who have additional needs and have a good knowledge of inclusion strategies, adapting activities, behavior management and community resources.
  • Have the ability to develop and access a variety of resources and a working knowledge of recreation program planning to meet the needs of all program participants.Previous camp experience is seen as an asset.
  • Experience and / or training in child development, children’s programs, and youth recreation is seen as an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Strong customer service experience.
  • A Social Development Check and Clear vulnerable sector and Criminal Record Check are mandatory for this role

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be physically capable of performing the physical tasks required for the program(s) being delivered.
  • Noise level may be loud occasionally.
  • May be required to respond to emergency situations within program(s) being delivered.
  • This is a 9 week summer student position (June 17-August 23)
  • 40 hours weekly during camp hours (8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday)
