Job Summary
The Advisor, Health and Safety serves the mission of the YMCA of Lethbridge by overseeing health and safety programs and initiatives across the Association with a focus on safety, compliance, and continuous improvement. The main goals of this position are:
1. Ensure safety rating and compliance with all Alberta OH&S and WCB legislation by recommending best practices to foster a safe and healthy workplace.
2. Strategically partner with all departments across the YMCA of Lethbridge to promote health and safety awareness through the development of safety programs.
3. Audit and maintain Association information in relation to the Health and Safety program.

Nature & Scope
The Advisor, Health and Safety will be responsible for supporting the Association as part of the People and Culture team in all Health and Safety initiatives and programs. The major responsibilities of this position are, but not limited to:
Leadership and Strategic Planning:
o Exemplify the YMCA of Lethbridge’s Core Values of caring, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, and responsibility.
o Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment of goals and objectives across the Association.
o Promote a positive, inclusive work environment, responding to general inquiries and resolving issues in a timely manner and in accordance with Association policies and guidelines.
o Support environmental initiatives to ensure the Association is meeting its corporate social responsibility of being a respectable corporate citizen.
o Be a YMCA ambassador by engaging in and promoting practices and frameworks which centre diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
o Demonstrate a commitment to health and safety, incident management and emergency response.
o Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, providing considerable explanation, clarification, and tact on sensitive, complex, or controversial issues.
o Support the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
o Ensure regulatory compliance with OHS Act, Regulations, and Code.
o Review and provide recommendations for emergency preparedness with respect to health and safety.
o Conduct health and safety audits of all YMCA of Lethbridge facilities including Certificate of Recognition (COR) internal audits when required.
Organizational and Department Management:
o Contribute to the creation and implementation of Association policies and guidelines in relation to Health and Safety.
o Carry out tasks requiring significant mental concentration and the use of analytical methods and processes regularly.
o Mentor and model best practices, setting high standards for excellence in execution.
o Work in collaboration with People and Culture to manage disability cases and return to work plans for both occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
o Identify and evaluate risks in relation to health and safety ad propose measures to mitigate risks.
o Work independently on diversified tasks, following policies, guidelines, and legislation.
o Complete regular inspections and assist with Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) with employees to identify potential hazards, risks, and damages.
o Lead and support in internal root cause and incident investigations, providing recommendations for corrective actions.
o Prepare reports utilizing data analytics to proactively identify trends and build action plans to support in the reduction of incident frequency.
o Review and provide recommendations on professional and legislatively accurate content that is engaging and informative.
o Work in collaboration with the Advisor, Procurement to ensure the maintenance of contractor pre-qualifications.
o Facilitate lunch and learn educational sessions for employees and supervisors.
o Attend all required YMCA trainings and recertifications and facilitate OHS training and recertification training when required.
Financial Management and Philanthropic Involvement:
o Model the Association’s dedication to philanthropy.
o Participate in Fund Development Initiatives to further the impact of team efforts.
o Adhere to the team’s annual budget, managing expenses within your area and ensuring proper coding and documentation is provided.
External Relations and Advocacy:
o Be a YMCA ambassador and strategic leader in the community by developing partnerships and relationships through community groups, committee work, and outreach opportunities.
o Educate others on People and Culture initiatives and projects.
o Follow policies regarding confidentiality to safeguard data and information and handle sensitive information with a strong sense of ethics and confidentiality, in addition to all Association policies and guidelines.
o Identify Health and Safety recommendations for growth opportunities in alignment with the Association’s strategic plan.
