Description of Role:

AbilityFirst has established the Employment Services Program, which provides opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to learn job skills and find gainful employment. As part of the Employment Services Program, a Job Coach provides direct supervision, training, and guidance to developmentally and physically disabled persons (individually or in groups) in community work settings, while ensuring the program participants are safe, properly trained, and able to comply with needs of employers.

Tasks:

  • Provides close supervision, training, and guidance to program participants to help them develop skills that will enable them to obtain jobs and retain jobs in community work settings. This includes:
    • Training on job tasks according to worker capabilities and employer priorities and preferences.
    • Intervening between employers and workers to create a positive and successful relationship.
    • Providing training opportunities and experiences to workers to enhance their performance and skills.
    • Participate in setting goals, advocating and supporting individual choice, and intervening with behavior difficulties.
  • Develops and maintains accurate, factual, complete documentation on consumer productivity, work performance, and behavior.
  • Oversees work to ensure quality control and compliance to meet employer standards.
  • Complies with all health and safety laws, regulations, and individual employers’ safety programs.
  • Works with supervisor to assess the training needs of program participants; plans and implements appropriate training programs.
  • Actively participates in meetings, in-service programs, and other programs or events.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Basic conflict resolution/problem-solving skills
  • Personal computer skills for record-keeping
  • Effective oral communications skills to supervise and train developmentally and physically disabled consumers and interact professionally with employers
  • Ability to work independently and make mature business decisions
  • Current California driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier
  • These requirements may be met by a combination of education that may include courses in related areas and experience in production positions.
