Monday- Friday 8:30-3:30

For 40 years Able ARTS Work has been providing creative arts services and opportunities for marginalize communities in particular Individuals with developmental disabilities as well as children and adults who are interested in inclusive art exploration.

About the Position:

We are looking for an Art Instructor to provide art classes to adults with developmental disabilities in 1 of our day programs located in the South Bay. We are looking for you to bring your expertise and passion to our students, our students love printmaking, painting, ceramics, collage, soft arts, digital arts and are always open to experimenting and learning something new. This position includes instruction, advocacy, case management and creative collaboration. We are looking for creative, compassionate, flexible, collaborator(s )who have great organizational and communication skills and excellent judgment skills.

Responsibilities Include ( a full job description will be provided when interview is scheduled):

  • Developing an arts curriculum that emphasizes and builds on student’s strengths, provides a loving and accepting environment conductive to growth, and promotes quality of life and community inclusion.
  • Managing quality classes and events as scheduled.
  • Advocating for client’s needs, concerns, and desires and supporting clients in self-advocacy.
  • Contributing professional knowledge
  • Organizing and coordinating community events, in-house performances and exhibits, and other events related to arts curriculum.
  • Working cooperatively with team members including other musicians, direct support professionals, music therapists, volunteers, supervisors, interdisciplinary team members, and community members.
  • Work with students that may display emotional behaviors that may require understanding, patience, and a behavioral plan
  • Work with students that may display undesirable behaviors including self-injurious behaviors
  • Teach and mentor students with special learning, physical or emotional needs in student driven subject matter
  • Accompany or assist in the transporting and instructing of students in off-campus or community-based activities
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings and monthly and yearly trainings
  • Works cooperatively with team to assist in providing an optimum learning environment.

A Few More Details:

  • Develop curriculum and class descriptions, lesson plans and goals and objectives for 3-4 classes per semester to be taught daily
  • Develop appropriate ISP reflecting student objectives with student input.
  • Design a pertinent pre/post test for each class when applicable.
  • Assist with the creation of two performances/open houses per year
  • Gather and maintain clear, concise student progress notes, class attendance, and objective-related data daily.
  • Assure confidentiality is upheld in regard to all information whether oral, written, pictorial, recorded (video, audio, or electronic), and observe all HIPAA regulations regarding such.
  • Assists in providing community inclusive programming.
  • Support students with specific physical and medical care as needed.
  • Establishes, develops, coordinates, and maintains respectful relationships with individuals served, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • BFA in arts or BA in social work, education or other related human services (those currently enrolled in school and working towards a BFA or BA will be considered)
  • Thorough knowledge and interest of art making techniques and interest in art history ( particularly contemporary art)
  • 1 years experience in working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Technical knowledge of computer, tablet, telephone
  • Passion for the arts
  • Enjoys learning and receptive to training.

35 hours per week, f/t
