GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The elementary mathematics specialist provides support for teachers and schools for the Academics Department. Complex work is performed within specific departmental objectives and policies; each coach plans his/her own work and coordinates with others as necessary. Contacts are regularly and frequently made at all organizational levels within and outside the department to explain and implement programs and policies; considerable professional judgment is required. Primary focus of job function is at the elementary level with additional support provided, as needed, to secondary schools.

- Collaborate with individual teachers or teams of teachers through co-planning, co-teaching, and coaching.
- Assist teachers in interpreting data and designing approaches to improve student achievement and instruction.
- Promote teachers’ delivery and understanding of the district curriculum through collaborative long-range and short-range planning.
- Facilitate teachers’ use of successful, research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
- Arrange for professional development through collaborative investigations or discussion groups with teachers.
- Conduct non-evaluative observations of teaching and learning to provide clinical supervision and improve instruction.
- Engage in research-based professional development and apply learned professional development practices.
- Assist in development of RCPS curriculum, instruction, and assessment resources.
- Prepare and deliver staff development activities related to the Academics Department and/or the Mathematics Department.
- Other duties as assigned by the Mathematics Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Advanced knowledge of the content, concepts, principles, and methodologies of mathematics education in a public school setting is required. Knowledge of current curriculum development, Virginia Standards of Learning, program implementation of mathematics, learning theory, recent research, school organization, supervision, and available state and local resources is required. Demonstrated ability to observe, monitor, and evaluate mathematics programs and/or teaching and learning is required. Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex programs and activities and ability to organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments is necessary. Ability to train and advise staff, to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and demonstrate skills in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, program management, and research and planning are required. Demonstrated ability to use and access a wide variety of media and technology to support job functions including proficient use of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Outlook are necessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Master’s Degree with emphasis in mathematics education; a minimum of five years of successful full-time teaching experience, preferably at more than one grade level, or any equivalent experience or training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete the job requirements are preferred. Professional development leadership experience and participation in professional development opportunities related to math and math education are preferred. Eligibility for Virginia teaching license is mandatory. Certification as a Mathematics Specialist is required.
