Description

Performs difficult advanced protective services work managing the daily operation of the Investigations division and Dispatch division, analyzing equipment and training needs of the division, directing Staff assignments, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Deputy Sheriff. Continuous supervision is exercised over Investigators, Dispatch Sergeant, and Dispatchers.

Examples of Duties

  • Manages daily investigative and dispatch division operations and assignments.

  • Supervises Dispatch sergeants’ work; approves sergeants' work product as well as facilitates their management and leadership needs.

  • Coordinates division goals and objectives to include the review and implementation of policy and directives.

  • Analyzes and coordinates division training needs and assessments.

  • Manages investigative division investigations and caseload; assigns cases for investigation.

  • Manages and analyzes investigative and dispatch division equipment needs and assessments.

  • Coordinates division collaboration with community and external stakeholders.

  • Manages budget analysis and purchase approvals.

  • Authorizes sick time, vacation, compensation time, and overtime of investigators and dispatcher staff; reviews and prepares employee time cards, fills shift openings with the investigative and dispatch division, participates in employee selection, conducts background and internal investigations as directed.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field and extensive experience in law enforcement, leadership, management, budget analysis, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standard Board Law Enforcement Officer certification upon hire. Obtain leadership and/or command level training/schooling within 1 year of hire. Valid driver's license in the State of Wisconsin.

Thorough knowledge of County and department policies and procedures to include emergency and inclement weather policies; ability to prioritize and manage multiple, concurrent projects; attention to detail and ability to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances; ability to manage daily patrol division operations to include patrol assignments and functions; ability to train staff and assess training needs; thorough knowledge of budget preparation and analysis; ability to approve purchases; thorough knowledge of the investigation process; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to operate and use standard office equipment; knowledge and ability to use standard office and position-specific software; ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other departments and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and tasting or smelling, frequently requires sitting, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
