Purpose of the Teacher Position
The purpose of the teacher assistant at Advent Lutheran School is to support the classroom teacher in creating a nurturing and effective learning environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.
Qualifications
- Classroom Experience
- Pursuing a bachelor's degree.
- Satisfactory criminal background check and drug screening.
- Knowledge of child growth and development.
- Knowledge of different learning styles and ability to use varied high-impact teaching methods.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with parents and others.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with others.
- Ability to assist with the implementation of lesson plans.
- Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology.
- Excellent classroom management skills.
- Ability to handle problems, concerns, and emotional distress with sensitivity and tact.
- Must be supportive of the purpose, vision, and mission of the church and school.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of a teacher assistant are multifaceted and can vary depending on the specific needs of the teacher, grade level, and individual classrooms. However, some common purposes and responsibilities of a teacher assistant include:
Support the Teacher
- Assist the primary teacher with various tasks such as preparing materials for lessons, grading assignments, and organizing classroom activities.
- Assist with managing the classroom environment, ensuring that students stay on task and follow classroom rules.
- Assist with maintaining order and discipline in the classroom, helping to enforce rules and address behavioral issues as they arise.
Provide Individualized Instruction
- Work with individual students or small groups of students who need extra support, attention, or enrichment. This could involve providing additional instruction, clarifying concepts, or offering encouragement to struggling students.
- Provide students with accommodations and modifications as needed or required.
Promote a Positive Learning Environment
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.
- Assist in creating and maintaining a welcoming environment where all students feel valued and supported in their learning journey.
Supervise Students
- Assist with student supervision during the instructional day.
- Assist with student supervision during various activities, such as recess, lunchtime, arrival and dismissal, and field trips.
- Ensure students' safety and well-being while promoting positive social interactions and responsible behavior.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Attend all staff meetings.
- Attend staff devotionals.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.
- Perform all other duties as listed in the employee’s current commitment letter.
