Job Summary: Editorial review and writing services for USGS-generated products and outside journal publications to be delivered for the USGS Publishing Network through the Pembroke Publishing Service Center by a qualified editor for any product produced by USGS authors. Responsibilities: - Editorial review of U.S. Geological Survey products, such as Open-File Reports, Scientific Investigations Reports, Professional Papers, Fact Sheets, General Information Products, and other outreach products. - Circulars, journal articles or proceedings by USGS authors for outside journals at a comprehensive Tier 2 level of work according to the Publishing Network established guidelines. - Some products will have maps, graphs, cross sections, block diagrams, and photographs. USGS products will include a simple Tier 1 copy edit of grammar, sentence structure, consistency checks, and completeness of content sections to one another and a Tier 2 comprehensive edit, which includes a Tier 1 edit plus extensive rewriting and/or reorganization of text for comprehension, verification checks, reference citation cross checking with reference lists, reference editing and checking, and policy violations of USGS policy.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: - Associate's degree or higher. - 10 years of high-level editor/writer experience with highly technical and complex scientific manuscripts that includes text, tables, and figures for geology, hydrology, biology, and(or) geography disciplines. - Editing capabilities and experiences include attention to detail and strong technical writing and editing skills for a variety of products for audiences that range from scientists to the general public. Experience interacting diplomatically with scientists who are the authors and show ability to guide and teach authors to become better writers of technical reports. - Able to work independently and remotely from home. - You must be able to meet all health requirements, including but not limited to, current and future vaccination requirements for infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Desired Qualifications: - Strong attention to detail. - Experienced technical writing and editing skills to improve content of reports and products for audiences that range from scientists to the general public. - Proven interpersonal and diplomatic skills to interact with author scientists. - Proven ability to guide and teach authors to become better writers of technical reports. - Proven experience using technical writing style and grammar resources and ability to conform to a particular style if needed. - Proven clarity of editorial comments using standard editing symbols and techniques. - Proven ability to meet deadlines.
