Akima is hiring a Science Technician II to provide The USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) in Ann Arbor, MI assistance working at the USGS laboratory with larval fish and zooplankton sample processing, larval fish stomach content and diet analysis, zooplankton identification, data management, and data summary tasks. The Science Tech II will: * Prepare larval fish and zooplankton samples for analysis.
* Assist in obtaining physical and biological data from fish and limnological samples. * Assist in the examination and analysis of field collections of biological material.
* Maintain accurate and up to date records of data obtained on samples collected in the field and on samples processed in the lab.
* Operate laboratory equipment (e.g., microscopes, balances, digital imaging systems, etc.).
* Dissect larval fish stomachs, identify diet items to species (i.e., species of zooplankton), quantify total diet weights.
* Tabulate, summarize, and graph data obtained from samples.
* Enter and check data in the USGS Oracle database.
* Travel may be required on occasion, to professional society meetings, workshops and other work-related meetings. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: * Familiar with standard concepts and practices within a lab
* Familiar with lab equipment such as microscopes, balances, digital imaging systems
* Experience with Laboratory safety protocol
* High school diploma
* 1 year of experience (preferred)
* Able to obtain and maintain a USGS PIV credential (equivalent to a Public Trust)
* Able to obtain a Red Cross CPR CertificationDesired Qualifications * Prefer experience with fish.
