Extended time may be required before and/or after the school year for this position which would be compensated at the hourly extended time rate. This is a State Teachers Retirement System position, Collective Bargaining Unit – AEA.

Position Summary:
School Description: This Akron Public middle school, grades 5-8, is a partnership among the Akron Public Schools, the City of Akron, the University of Akron, the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation, Greater Akron Chamber and Akron Tomorrow. The vision of the school is to provide the highest quality educational experience for students of all abilities that ensure creativity and inventive thinking through a focus on science, math, engineering and technology. A curriculum that incorporates the expertise of content specialists and the diversity of partner resources which, in combination with innovative teaching and learning practices, delivered in a challenging, supportive environment creates the conditions for student success. The school is a professional development site for The University of Akron College of Education, undergraduate and graduate programs. Partners’ staff members will have ongoing presence in the classrooms and building. The program meets and complies with federal, state and District standards.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interest and abilities of students, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior;
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students;
- Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives;
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports;
- Counsels with colleagues, students and/or parents on a regular basis;
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct; for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance;
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
- Accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned;
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence;
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required; and
- Reports to and carries out any other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.
Qualifications:
- Valid Ohio K-12 or teaching certificate/licensure in Mandarin Chinese;
- Ability to work collaboratively.

- Frequent district wide travel and occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
- Subject to frequent interruptions, noises, odors, temperatures throughout work day.
- Sits, stands and moves intermittently throughout work day.
