Summary
This position is located in Yakutat, AK. Executes duties under the direction of the captain, to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of the vessel. Assist the Captain in monitoring vessel systems and troubleshooting problems. Interact with passengers by answering questions and helping with specific requests. Operate a galley and gift shop which includes food preparation, snack and beverage service, and the sale of local retail products. Provide passenger safety while underway and always maintain an impeccably clean & safe vessel.
- This is a rotating position, requiring working equally in the galley and as well as assisting with deckhand duties.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Deckhand Duties :
Must have basic knowledge of marine diesel engine systemsCheck all engine / jet fluids upon arriving on the vessel each morning, bring all equipment online, log all entries, and report any issues to the captainDirect and assist passenger movement on and about the vessel in ocean swellParticipate in passenger safety orientation and maintain safe conditions underway, assist crew / passengers in emergenciesVessel duties include line handling while shipside in ocean swell, assisting with docking / undocking of the vessel, and mooring with cruise ships as requested by the vessel captainComplete routine engine room checks underway, reporting any issues or concerns to the captain. Making minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as necessaryAssist crew members to ensure that passengers receive optimum tour quality and premium customer serviceAssist the captain in the wheelhouse with navigating in ice conditions and low visibility, and wildlife spotting. Driving when directed by the captainMaintain vessel appearances, with regards to cleanliness and safety, in engine and jet rooms, in voids, and on decks. Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance in cabins, heads, and on decksUnder the direction of the captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance daily. This will include, but not be limited to cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking, and refuelingAssist the captain in performing required safety checks of all essential equipment weekly. Maintain current and accurate logbooksWork with the port engineer and captain to complete all mandatory vessel maintenance monthly, including but not limited to oil / filter changes, zinc / belt replacement, etc.Identify problems, inform the captain and port engineer, and assist in performing needed repairs.Perform other assigned duties under the supervision of the captainSpecial projects may be assigned as required by the captainGuest Service Duties :
Operate a galley, bar, and commissary, including preparation & distribution of snacks, drinks, sales, stocking, inventory order lists, and related paperworkRoutine maintenance includes but is not limited to cleaning, sanitation, restocking consumables in the cabin area and heads, making note of needed equipment repairsEnhance the cruise experience for passengers, including answering questions and helping passengers with specific problems / requestsCommunicate with up to 150 passengers on a PA systemWork as a team with other crew members to present coordinated narration and provide a quality experience for customersAssist other crew members in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safetyMinimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Requires basic seamanship skillsMechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines are requiredMust be able to work as a team with other crew to provide quality experience for customers, including answering questions and providing commentaryMust be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guestsMust be clean, well-groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliableMust be comfortable walking about the vessel and working in ocean swellWriting skills capable of completing forms and making log entriesMust be able to operate a cash register efficiently as well as keep money records and maintain a professional, friendly attitude toward customersAlways present a professional and friendly attitude to guests and crewMust be 21 Must have some vessel / crew experienceValid US driver’s license and a clean driving recordMust pass a security background check and DOT drug test.Required Certifications
Certifications required before the first day of employment include :
CPR / First Aid certificationAlaska Food Handler cardTAPS certification to serve alcohol (Employees 21 must obtain)Preferred Qualifications
