Shipping Operator
Location: ALTIVIA Specialty Chemicals La Porte, TX
Shift: Requires shift work, including overtime, callouts, and vacation coverage as needed
Position Overview
The Shipping Operator is responsible for safely handling shipments, loading and unloading hazardous materials, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards. This role involves operating various equipment, maintaining accurate shipping documentation, and supporting plant operations in a chemical manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Shipping & Receiving: Load and unload tankers, railcars, and drums. Manage domestic and export shipments.
- Documentation & Compliance: Prepare and verify shipping paperwork, including bills of lading. Ensure proper placarding of outbound shipments.
- Safety & Emergency Response: Follow La Portes Process Safety Management (PSM), Health, Safety & Security (HS&S), and Quality Systems. Maintain E-Squad qualifications, including Industrial Fire Brigade, HAZMAT response, CPR, First Aid, and Incident Command training.
- Equipment Operation: Operate forklifts, fifth-wheel trucks, and other equipment required for shipping operations.
- Housekeeping & Organization: Maintain a clean and organized work area to support safety and efficiency.
- Regulatory Compliance: Handle hazardous materials in accordance with DOT regulations.
- Training & Development: Learn and adhere to department procedures while gaining knowledge of plant processes.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Basic math skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a team, follow supervisor directions, and prioritize tasks.
- Willingness to work in outdoor environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a chemical plant environment.
- Process Technology Degree.
- Experience with Chempax ERP.
Physical Requirements
- Must regularly lift and move up to 50 lbs and occasionally handle weights exceeding 100 lbs.
- Frequent standing, walking, and reaching; occasional climbing, kneeling, or crawling.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including outdoor settings.
- Must meet vision requirements, including color and depth perception.
