Overview

This position is responsible for underwriting, reviewing, analyzing, and understanding business financial performance as part of the SBA loan origination and underwriting process.  It spreads, assembles, and accurately analyzes borrower financials.  It generates analysis summaries that can be applied to loan underwriting and effectively communicates findings to relevant parties.

 

Provides in-depth analysis and underwriting of business, commercial and industrial loan applications. Provides in-depth analysis and review of existing commercial loans.  Provides high quality and professional service to business members. Supports credit union departments and branches. Works with staff to improve operations. Ensures the accuracy of SBA loan applications submitted for committee approval.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the underwriting, analysis and evaluation of SBA loan applications per credit union policy, procedure, and industry standards

  • Spreads financial information of new loan applications to provide sufficient understanding of the borrower’s financial position, managerial strategy, and expected financial performance.
  • Analyzes financial statements and formulates questions about borrowers and guarantors to understand borrowing position and risk.
  • Tests presumed collateral value and performance utilizing the income capitalization and other relevant methods.
  • Identifies key risk to repayment sources and provides mitigants.
  • Provides written analysis for the credit presentation to senior management, ALM, and those with credit approval authority.
  • Completes annual loan reviews of existing SBA loans in the portfolio, identifying potential risk in cash flow and business operations.

 

Responsible for underwriting SBA 7(a) and 504 loans according to the SBA’s effective Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

  • Regularly reviews the SOP and relevant SBA notices to ensure compliance with SBA regulations and procedures for each loan request.
  • Completes the aforementioned financial analyses (in Section 1) according to the standards of the SBA.
  • Review analyses of other SBA Underwriters for grammar, compliance, accuracy, and credit risk.
  • Attends SBA trainings as assigned.

 

Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective coordination and communication with credit union personnel and with management.

  • Assists all other employees in operational duties as needed. Informs departments and branches as needed.
  • Completes required reports, records and other documentation.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and trainings as required.
  • Keeps management informed of area activities. Immediately reports any significant problems or concerns.

 

Responsible for related duties as required or assigned.

  • Stays informed regarding local and national economic conditions.  Monitors legal and regulatory changes.
  • Ensures proper maintenance, cleanliness, and security of work area. Ensures member confidentiality.
  • Accountable to review and respond to policy violations and document rejects in a timely manner.
  • Assists credit union members, potential members, and employees over the phone to answer questions regarding SBA loans.
  • Completes special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Training/Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field or equivalent combination of formal training and experience.

 

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years of direct SBA underwriting experience including 7(a), Express, and 504 loans.
  • Understanding of accounting functions, financial statements, and GAAP requirements
  • Understanding of business lending functions
  • Understanding of credit worthiness
  • Understanding of training and development processes
  • Understanding of MS Office software applications.

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Thorough knowledge of Credit Union products, services, policies, and procedures including but not limited to: consumer and residential lending practices.
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressive business or commercial lending experience or minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in areas where accounting, underwriting, and financial analysis skills were demonstrated.
  • Experience reading, dissecting, and interpreting financial statements.
  • Experience underwriting business credit, identifying risk, and mitigating risk.
  • Experience underwriting complex deal structures with multiple entities, guarantors, and sources of cash flow.
