Job Description:
Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is seeking an entry level Mechanical Testing Technician (Materials Processing & Characterization) to support the Light Alloy Lab, located on center at the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, Virginia. The successful candidate will join a team of senior technical staff to provide analysis activities in support of the NASA LaRC RSES (Research, Science and Engineering Services) contract in LaRC’s Advanced Materials and Processing Branch. The ideal candidate will have the ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions and standard operating procedures using fundamental knowledge of mechanical principles and practices. Job-specific instruction and training will be provided, after which the candidate must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. The work environment requires working with other team members; good work attendance and attention to detail and safety are critical to achieving quality and operational goals. The candidate will interface with internal and external customers as needed, and work output will be held to high quality standards.
Responsibilities:
The candidate should have basic knowledge of materials (metallics, composites, and ceramics), and knowledge of servo-hydraulic systems would be a plus. This position is to primarily support the mechanical materials testing lab, an additional understanding of pressure and vacuum system principles and the ability to interpret instrumentation as it applies to pressure, temperature, fluid flow and force would be welcomed. Training will be provided in the operation of the lab’s analytical support equipment involving mechanical testing, sample preparation, physical measurement, data collection, formatting and reporting of test results and output data. The candidate may be required to operate additional equipment including vacuum coaters, sputter coaters, and various other vacuum systems, however the candidate will primarily support mechanical materials testing. The candidate will also be trained to perform routine periodic maintenance of certain laboratory equipment. The job requires the ability to work with hazardous materials, high voltage, high temperature and cryogenic equipment safely and in accordance with all applicable laboratory, state, and federal safety procedures and permits.
Education and Qualifications:
High School Diploma required; associate degree or higher in electrical/mechanical technology desired.
Minimum 1 year mechanic’s apprentice or fabrication shop experience desired.
Must be PC-literate and familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Must understand typical safety precautions and maintenance of tools and equipment.
Willing and able to safely handle hazardous materials and understand electrical hazards.
Good oral and written communication skills in the English language.
Ability to quickly adapt to dynamic work requirements and learn new disciplines and skills.
Military veteran with maintenance experience is a plus.
US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency is required due to customer site restrictions.
