Summary

The Survey Instrument Operator assists in completing company land and construction surveys, bluestake for power plants, transmission/distribution overhead/underground lines, land acquisitions/disposals, underground piping, build changes and special surveys. May layout new buildings and piping.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Valid Arizona drivers license.
  • Experience using AutoCAD software program.
  • Able to hike several miles in all weather conditions carrying survey equipment and material.

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

  • Utility/land survey experience.
  • Experience operating survey instruments such as standard and robotic total stations, and Trimble GPS survey equipment.
  • Knowledge of Trimble office software or other survey software.
  • Knowledge of survey mathematics (e.g., algebra, geometry, trigonometry).
  • Knowledge of Public Land Survey System.

Major Accountabilities

1) Learns to operate all survey instruments to obtain accurate and timely field data on directions, line angles, distances and elevations.

2) Researches department records and contacts various governmental agencies and engineering firms to obtain legal descriptions, survey maps, subdivision plats and highway/street plans required to complete assigned work.

3) Ensures survey vehicle, material and equipment are well maintained and ready for use. Maintains safety awareness and ensures no lost-time accidents.

4) Assists Survey Representative in laying out all new work orders to be constructed.

5) Assists Survey Representative by creating detailed field notes of survey in progress. Prepares final survey notes, drawings and releases to the proper departments in appropriate/usable form.

6) Learns to perform calculations on field data to determine exact locations of company facilities/boundaries and ensure accuracy of the field notes.

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.



*Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).

  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
