Job Description :

The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies is seeking an energetic Academic Success Advisor with initiative, good judgment and the ability to work in a very busy and ever-changing environment. Under supervision of the Manager, Academic Advising, incumbent will serve as a key contributor to increase student retention and graduation rates university-wide, and will support students in making timely progress toward a degree through a range of academic counseling and support strategies. Incumbent will work with undergraduate traditional and non-traditional students enrolled in immersion and online degree program(s).

Salary Range : $46,000 - $50,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties :

  • Provides 1 : 1 as well as occasional group academic advising, recruitment / retention, and academic success support functions to students to ensure ongoing successful progress to completion of degree program. Advising is conducted face-to-face as well as by phone, Zoom, and e-mail.
  • Utilizing eAdvisor, DARS, PeopleSoft, Salesforce, etc., assists students explore a variety of academic options, register for courses and make timely progress towards completion of degree.
  • Works closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to : degrees, minors, certificates, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to students' goals, interests and skills.
  • Monitors student academic progress through a variety of reporting tools including eAdvisor, DARS, Salesforce, and PeopleSoft
  • Works closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to ensure academic success.
  • Acts as college / department liaison to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success
  • Working under limited or minimal supervision, handles problems, provides guidance and advice to students.
  • Responds to student questions and concerns; works with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to completion
  • As primary liaison, connects students with academic and personal resources including, but not limited to : tutoring, counseling and career services; provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with academic units and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support
  • Utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success
  • Assists with various student-focused events, such as convocation, Fall Welcome, etc., which may include attending and / or presenting
  • Assists with academic program development and implementation
  • As needed, may act as a course instructor (such as for internships, student success, or career-focused courses)

Desired Qualifications :

  • Master's degree in related area
  • Experience with "non-traditional" student populations (i.e. returning, transfer, online, veterans)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies.
  • Experience in using internet-based research tools and Microsoft Office computer applications
  • Experience with Student Information Systems, Salesforce, and online Degree Audit programs
  • Experience adapting to and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies and methods
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure, organization, and policies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic programs, colleges, departments and schools university-wide
  • Demonstrated student service orientation
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills, as well as basic math skills
  • Evidence of attention to detail
  • Working Environment :

  • Candidate will work in an environmentally controlled office space using a computer, keyboard and mouse for long periods of time. Occasional nights and / or weekend events will be required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs and walk distances across campus. Regular activities require using multiple systems at the same time (such as student information system, customer relationship management system, degree progress tools, and appointment scheduling systems) and the ability to quickly change priorities. Activities may require ability in resolving conflicts and coping with moderate stress levels, along with the ability to complete tasks within set time constraints.
  • This is an in-person position based at the Tempe campus with the possibility of up to 2 days per week remote work after an initial training period, contingent upon performance.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

    Associate's degree and one (1) year of experience appropriate to the area of assignment / field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and / or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
