Overall Responsibility: With guidance from senior engineers, the Mechanical Designer will be responsible for the completion and maintenance of high quality mechanical and plumbing designs, including but not limited to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)-- plumbing piping design, fuel piping systems, fire protection systems and sprinkler piping layout, using appropriate software programs and drawing standards.
Essential Functions
- Determines design criteria, drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components.
- Refines rough sketches and notes to include material quantities and equipment specifications obtained from standard calculations and vendor information.
- Develops quantities and determines labor and material costs for cost estimates-- generally supports preparation of contract documents.
- Accurately performs appropriate calculations for assignments, including but not limited to: hydraulic calculations for hydronic systems; duct pressure loss calculations; plumbing system calculations for domestic cold water, domestic hot water, sanitary sewer, storm water, and pumping systems.
- Prepares plan drawings, riser diagrams, details, and schedules using appropriate software.
- Develops solutions to design problems.
- Selects basic HVAC equipment with guidance from senior engineers in the company.
- Performs site surveys and contributes to engineering studies.
- Attends and contributes to client and departmental meetings.
- Ensures assigned projects are completed within budget and on time.
- Supports applicable software requests as needed.
- Lends support to all business areas outside of mechanical focus as needed.
- Duties as assigned by Operations Manager or Mechanical Office Lead.
Needed Skills:
- Demonstrated interest in building system designs including HVAC, Plumbing Systems and Fire Protection Systems.
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and practical application of pure sciences.
- Proficient in MS Office, especially Word and Excel.
- AutoCAD and Revit proficiency.
- Understanding of underlying principles of A/E industry.
- Ability to prioritize tasks.
- Detail and safety-oriented.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Ability to create and maintain productive relationships with employees, clients, and vendors.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or related four-year degree.
- EIT preferred.
- 1 - 5 years’ experience as mechanical designer.
- Ability to drive and maintain a safe driving record.
- Valid state driver’s license (any in US).
- In possession of appropriate paperwork to gain and maintain employment in the US.
- Ability to meet worksite security requirements.
