What We Are Looking For:
The GAAP Financial Reporting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the preparation and submission of financial reports and statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for the life insurance company. This role will ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, assist in the interpretation and application of accounting standards, and provide leadership to the financial reporting team. The manager will also work closely with external auditors, actuarial teams, and other internal departments to ensure accuracy, transparency, and timeliness in reporting. This role is required to be onsite 3 days a week at our Durham, NC headquarters.
What You Will Do:
- Lead the preparation of quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
- Ensure the timely and accurate submission of reports to senior management and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate with the actuarial, legal, and operational departments to gather data for financial reporting.
- Responsible for reviewing and approving journal entries and account reconciliations. Oversee the processing and recording of monthly transactions within the General Ledger. Oversee compilation, summary, review and analysis of information for consistency and reasonableness.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, including new and emerging accounting standards specific to life insurance, such as ASC 944.
- Maintain internal controls to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and other regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits, providing necessary documentation and addressing audit inquiries.
- Lead initiatives to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the financial reporting process, including automation and system enhancements.
- Implement best practices for financial reporting within the life insurance industry, and continuously seek opportunities to streamline reporting functions.
- Oversee the extraction and integration of financial data from the company’s ERP system and data warehouse sources to ensure accuracy in GAAP reporting.
- Collaborate with IT and data management teams to ensure data consistency, availability, and security in the financial reporting process.
- Analyze and validate data obtained from ERP systems (e.g., Oracle) and other financial data platforms to support accurate reporting and ensure proper data flow into GAAP financial statements.
