Overview :

MxV Rail seeks a Principal Systems Engineer to support the Communications and Train Control (C&TC) team in defining, designing, modeling, testing, and evaluating C&TC technologies for the railroad industry. We seek a talented and highly motivated engineer to support current and next-generation train control technology and railway operations research. The successful candidate will support the research and systems engineering of Positive Train Control (PTC) systems, railroad safety systems, automation technology, lifecycle management, and / or other C&TC areas of activity.

Primary Responsibilities :

The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for providing professional engineering and scientific services to internal and external customers as directed by the Staff Leader. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing project leadership and technical oversight, as well as interfacing directly with railroad committees, vendors, suppliers, and stakeholders. This role involves using engineering principles, systems engineering, data analysis, programming languages, database management / querying for research, and engineering of train control systems. The successful candidate is expected to participate in all phases of projects by assisting in requirements development, modeling, implementation, test planning, test execution, data analysis, presentations, and report writing. The successful candidate is also expected to have project leadership responsibilities, which include assisting in proposal preparation, project planning, project execution, project oversight, technical oversight and mentoring of internal staff, customer interaction, and deliverable preparation.

Requirements

Essential duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Leading the development of system concepts and formal system Concepts of Operations documents.
  • Leading development of systems engineering documentation, including formal system functional and performance requirements and interface specifications.
  • Oversight of internal and industry processes related to systems engineering of interoperable train control technologies.
  • Providing input on the implementation of configuration management processes.
  • Providing input on the deployment architecture of requirements management tools.
  • Providing input on system safety activities to support the development of systems engineering documentation.
  • Performing requirements tracing tasks within requirements management tools.
  • Project management duties including oversight of project activities and managing project schedules and budgets.
  • Leading technology research and development activities.
  • Leading problem definition and technical needs analysis across various projects within C&TC.
  • Mentoring of junior-level staff.
  • Working independently or within a multi-disciplinary group composed of MxV Rail staff, railroad personnel, and vendor product development personnel.
  • Representing MxV Rail in industry committees and at industry conferences.
  • Identification and development of project opportunities and technical capabilities to support industry needs related to train control applications.
  • Ensures that all duties and responsibilities are performed in a safe manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other duties may include :

  • Performing data simulations and analysis related to train control systems.
  • Supporting the definition and execution of formal test cases and test programs.
  • Leading data collection, organization, and analysis using common, customized tools and techniques.
  • Applying statistical methods to determine requirements, processes, and standards.
  • Required Skills & Abilities :

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • At least ten years of professional engineering experience in the areas of systems engineering, train operations, and train control.
  • Experience working with engineering projects related to PTC systems, specifically those deployed by the North American freight railroad industry, e.g., ITC PTC.
  • Familiarity with Association of American Railroads (AAR) standards and Federal regulations related to railroad operations and train control systems.
  • Experience working with railroad operating rules (GCOR and NORAC).
  • Professional experience with systems engineering concepts, particularly the system definition process (requirements analysis, system concept definition, and requirements definition) and test methodology (test case definition, test design).
  • Familiarity with requirements management, including requirements management tools and requirements tracing activities.
  • Experience with projects involving the development of practical solutions to unique, open-ended problems.
  • Experience leading projects, including oversight of project activities, quality of deliverables, and management of project budgets and schedules.
  • Experience working across different levels within and outside an organization.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team from a hybrid work environment.
  • Experience with industry committees and / or professional / technical organizations responsible for standards setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, along with demonstrable public speaking skills. Capable of preparing and delivering technical presentations to scientific groups.
  • Demonstrable computer skills, with experience using Microsoft® Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Understanding of railroad industry safety, operational efficiency, and reliability objectives and related strategies.
  • Familiarity with, or basic understanding of, risk / threat / hazard analysis.
  • Experience in testing against system requirements, including familiarity with test case management and software tools and traceability of test cases to system requirements.
  • Experience with reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis concepts.
  • Proficient in testing methods, data collection, analysis techniques, and reporting.
  • Working Environment and Level of Physical Activity :

  • Environment : Office and field environments. Must be able to walk in an industrial and / or railroad environment, including uneven surfaces such as ballast.

  • Hearing : Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
  • Travel : Travel will be required to support industry events and outreach, and it is estimated to be 15%.
