Legal Assistant

Department: County Attorney

Reports to: County Attorney and Office Manager

Hourly Rate: starting hourly rate is $16.50 but may increase based on prior experience

Position Summary

The Atchison County Attorney’s Office is actively recruiting for an experienced Legal Assistant. Legal Assistants in the Atchison County Attorney’s Office provide support to the attorneys and assist with case processing. Legal Assistants prepare, maintain, process and distribute various pleadings, reports, and other documents pertinent to the functions of the County Attorney’s Office. Crucial to success in this position is a person who is detail oriented, mature attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and develop professional working relationships with all staff members and attorneys. This position has access to sensitive and confidential information and must maintain confidentiality at all times.

First review of applications will begin February 13, 2023, and the position will remain open until filled.

Primary Duties

· Type, copy, gather and/or distribute a variety of pleadings, forms, records and reports.

· Record, index, retrieve, file, and copy correspondence, reports, and other materials.

· Responsible for total file management on cases within their assigned unit.

· Expected to work normal office hours.

· Operation of General Office Equipment: Phone, Work Computer, Copier, Scanner.

· Assist in the input of new cases into the electronic management case file.

· Serve as a receptionist: including answering the phones and assisting the public.

· Perform other related work as assigned.

Additional Requirements

· Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

· Pass a criminal background check.

· Experience with PC and basic programs: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, email.

· Ability to understand policies, procedures, and services of the County Attorney’s Office.

· Ability to learn and utilize specialized language and terms.

· Ability to deal with other employees, law enforcement, members of the public, and court personnel tactfully, respectfully, and courteously.

· Ability to learn and utilize specific software to complete job functions; including, case management software and video applications for body cameras, dash cameras, surveillance cameras, etc.

· Ability to pass post-offer employment and drug screens.

Physical Conditions

· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers; and talk and hear.

· The employee frequently is required to walk and climb or balance.

· The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms.

· The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and distance vision.

· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a noise level in the work environment that is usually moderate.
