What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at Barnabas Center?
Summary/Objectives:
The Medical Assistant helps optimize patient’s visits and care. While performing various office and clinical duties the Medical Assistant will work directly with Barnabas practice staff to collect test samples, maintain patient records, explain common medical procedures to patients, assist in room sanitation/preparation and in basic exams. The Medical Assistant reports to the Health Services Manager while working under the license of the primary provider, and existing protocols and procedures.
Essential Functions:

1. Performs nursing procedures under the supervision of an RN and/or medical providers.
2. Escorts patients to exam rooms. Takes patient’s social and medical history, applying motivational interview techniques. Measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature. Document all information in patients chart on the EMR.
3. Ensures all related reports, labs and information is filed and available in patient’s medical record prior to their appointments.
4. Performs EKGs, Hemocult (done in room), Dipstick, change dressings. Removes staples and/or stitches. Assist providers preparing for Joint Injections/Joint Tray.
5. Assists medical providers in exam rooms. Serves as a room chaperone. Provides patient education and instructions as directed by providers.
6. Take telephone messages and provide feedback and answers to patients, physicians and pharmacy calls. Triage and process messages from patient and front office staff to providers.
7. Schedules patient appointments and diagnostic procedures such as CT scans and MRI’s.
8. Keep exam rooms sanitized and stocked with adequate medical supplies; maintain instruments.
9. Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, etc.).
10. All other duties as assigned by the Health Services Manager or provider.
Competency (knowledge, skills, abilities):
1. Healthcare field and medical specialty.
2. Medical terminology and common laboratory and medical test procedures.
3 Common medication names for chronic conditions treated at Barnabas.
4. EMR used by Barnabas, with proficiency required after 30 days.
5. Knowledge of HIPPA.
6. Universal precaution and biohazard handling.
7. Basic life support to respond to life-threatening situations like heat attacks or choking.
8. Exceptional customer service.
9. Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow.
10. Ability to perform EKG and assist provider during Pap smear.
11. Patient teaching using “repeat after me” and motivational interview techniques.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. In the working environment of the clinic there may be potential exposure to communicable diseases, contaminated blood and body fluids and hazardous materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally list and/or move up to 40 pounds. Repetitive motion of upper body required for extended us of computer. Requires specific vision abilities include vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00 pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel:
No travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience:
Current Medical Assistant Certification at time of job offer or two years’ experience in the medical field and certification updated within three months of being on the job, and employee must not lapse credentialing.
Other health care related degree may be accepted depending on previous experience.
CPR and First Aid certification required by the end of introductory period of 90 days, and employee must not lapse credentialing.
