Job Description :

The Survey Party Chief is responsible for overseeing and executing construction staking for various projects, including NCDOT, municipal, and private civil construction. This role ensures the accurate, timely, and efficient completion of survey tasks, collaborating closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen. The Survey Party Chief is also tasked with troubleshooting and correcting field-related issues while performing required survey-related tasks such as boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and drone surveys.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Lead Survey Crew

Supervise and direct the survey crew in the field, ensuring construction staking activities are carried out efficiently and accurately.

  • Oversee the construction staking process for NCDOT, municipal, and private civil construction projects.
  • Project Coordination
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen to schedule and coordinate staking activities for construction projects.

  • Ensure that all staking tasks are completed within the established timelines and to the required specifications.
  • Project Cost / Billing
  • Accurately prepare and provide detailed cost estimates for surveying projects.

  • Oversee and manage billing processes for projects, ensuring that all services are documented and accounted for.
  • Track project costs and provide regular updates to project managers, superintendents, and division managers.
  • Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
  • Identify and resolve field-related construction issues, specifically related to layout, drainage, and staking, ensuring that all work complies with project specifications and regulatory requirements.

  • Quality Control and Accuracy
  • Perform calculations and checks of staking plans to verify accuracy and ensure correct implementation in the field.

  • Ensure all staking data aligns with project requirements, minimizing errors or rework.
  • Additional Survey Tasks
  • Conduct additional survey-related work as needed, including boundary surveys, existing topographic surveys, and utilizing drone technology for surveying purposes.

  • Adapt to the needs of the project and provide support for other surveying tasks as necessary.
  • Qualifications :

  • Education / Experience
  • Associates / bachelor's degree in civil engineering or surveying (Preferred)

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Min of 2 years' experience as party chief performing construction staking tasks (Required)
  • Min of 5 years construction staking experience (Required)
  • Drone Survey Experience (Not required but a plus)
  • NC Driver's license (Required)
  • Part 107 - Drone Pilot License (Not required but a plus)
  • Skills
  • Strong understanding of construction staking techniques and tools.

  • Proficiency in using survey instruments and software (e.g., total stations, GPS, AutoCAD).
  • Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and other technical documents.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in a construction setting.
  • Computer Skills

  • Capability to download and email survey data
  • Communication & Leadership
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for coordinating with project teams and providing clear directions to the crew.

  • Ability to lead a team, managing tasks and workflows effectively.
  • Physical Requirements
  • Lift 50 lbs.

  • Work in varying terrain (flat, hills, rock, thick wooded area, water)
  • Ability to use hand tools such as machete, shovel, hammer, etc.
  • Night / weekend work may be required
  • Working Conditions :

  • Primarily field-based work at construction sites.
  • Will involve working outdoors in various weather conditions.
