Job Description
Residential Support Staff (RSS) will orient all new residents into the shelter. RSS are responsible for assisting residents and their children in settling into the shelter, observing rules, observing safety rules, and documenting any problems that arise. RSS help residents and their children relay information to the Caseworkers and Shelter Manager. RSS will assist in light housekeeping, resident room inspection, and clerical duties. RSS will be awake during swing and midnight shifts to respond effectively to crisis calls. There are three (3) shift types: Day Shift, Swing Shift, and Midnight Shift.
Primary Functions
- Part-Time RSS will complete a minimum of two (2) shifts per week for a total of (16) hours as scheduled by the Shelter Manager.
- The Part-Time RSS will need to be available and flexible to complete additional shifts for shelter staff who call in or when shift coverage is needed.
- Provides coverage of the crisis phone line, answers and logs calls in accordance with organizational policies,
- Makes necessary referrals to community resources if prospective resident does not qualify for shelter services,
- Assists residents with daily surveys,
- Conducts an Initial Contact interview and complete all required documentation with prospective residents over the phone,
- Orients new residents to the shelter and provide all needed supplies while documenting supplies given on all proper forms and logs,
- Conducts regular room visits and provides immediate feedback for correction regarding safety issues, cleanliness, necessary repairs and maintenance,
- Uses NAP (Narrative, Action, and Plan) format on progress notes and assures consistency of documentation required,
- Completes all required documentation within time limits,
- Assists residents to clarify and prioritize their needs through the use of active listening techniques,
- Provides support to residents under the direction of the Shelter Manager,
- Performs light housekeeping, as needed such as disinfecting the office area, common use area of the residents such as coffee table, play room, support group groom, bathroom cleaning, and vacuuming,
- Performs clerical tasks, as requested such as answering the crisis line, being courteous to shelter residents, sending emails (End of Shift reports), making copies, keeping track of billing, prioritizing tasks by order of importance, staying familiar with organizational policies and procedures communicated to RSS,
- Maintains a consistent respectful, courteous, positive, cooperative and professional demeanor with residents, co-workers, and general public,
- Works as an effective team member to ensure the highest quality and most relevant services are provided to residents, to help further the mission of the organization,
- Provides reliable information through spoken and written communication with no intentional falsehoods, omissions, or exaggerations,
- Adheres to organizational policies and procedures,
- Maintains confidentiality of residents, employees and confidential organization information,
- Interacts with residents, co-workers and visitors in a respectful, non-violent, non-controlling manner at all times,
- Provides transportation to residents when necessary and assigned,
- Attends trainings and staff meetings, as required,
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required.
- (2) years customer service preferred OR (1) year in a social service setting
- Other education endeavors and/or experience in the human services field may be substituted for formal education requirements at the discretion of the Executive Director.
- Previous employment or volunteer work in domestic violence is preferred. Candidates will be evaluated individually on the appropriateness of their experience.
- Staff employed by Battered Families Services, Inc. shall be violent free in their own lives and must have resolved all personal issues if a survivor or a perpetrator of domestic violence.
- Must be able to maintain healthy boundaries with the clients served by the program.
- Understanding of domestic violence and its dynamics.
- Able to work with people of diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Computer literacy is a plus
- Able to complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Must complete an NCIC records check with no adverse recommendations from CYFD.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record to be able to provide transportation to residents.
Experience
- (1) year preferred domestic violence work or related social service setting
FLSA Status
Non-Exempt. The RSS is employed at will, which means she/he may be terminated for any reason or no reason at all.
