Job Description Job Title: Principal, Middle School FLSA Status: Exempt, 226 days Reports To: Deputy Superintendent Pay Grade: AD-7 Department: Campus Administration Date Revised: 6/30/2020 Primary Purpose: Direct and manage the instructional program and supervise operations and personnel at the campus level. Provide leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service. Oversee compliance with district policies, success of instructional programs, and operation of all campus activities. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Master’s degree in educational administration Texas principal or other appropriate Texas certificate Certified Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) appraiser Texas teaching certificate Special Knowledge/Skills: Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness Ability to manage budget and personnel Ability to coordinate campus functions Ability to implement policy and procedures Ability to interpret data Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills Experience: Three (3) years experience as a classroom teacher Experience in instructional leadership roles (preferred) Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instructional Management 1. Provide instructional leadership so that students receive authentic and engaging instruction at an appropriate level of rigor. 2. Continuously monitor the campus instructional plan to ensure that program activities are related to program goals; use these findings for corrective action and improvement, as well as for recognition of success. 3. Work with campus and central office staff to plan, implement, and evaluate the curriculum on a systematic basis; include student and community representatives when appropriate. 4. Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals. 5. Evaluate and recommend improvements in the purpose, design, and implementation of instructional programs related to the mission of the school. School / Organizational Climate 6. Foster collegiality and team-building among staff members; encourage their active involvement in the decision-making process. 7. Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance from staff and students in a supportive manner; provide recognition of excellence and achievement. 8. Facilitate the effective and timely resolution of conflicts. 9. Establish and maintain a positive, caring environment which is conducive to learning and promotes positive staff morale. 10. Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members; actively involve the staff and other stakeholders in planning and decision-making activities. School / Organizational Improvement 11. Demonstrate visionary leadership in order to prepare a diverse student body with 21st Century learning tools and techniques. 12. Ensure the efficient collaboration and supervision of all departments and grade levels on campus. 13. Develop and build a common vision with staff for school improvement; implement programs collaboratively to ensure attainment of the school’s mission. 14. Identify, analyze, and apply educational research findings to facilitate school improvement. 15. Develop annual campus performance objectives addressing each academic excellence indicator using the campus planning process and site-based decision making committee. Personnel Management 16. Interview, select, and orient new staff effectively; make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal. 17. Define expectations for staff performance regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and communication with the public. 18. Supervise staff effectively by observing instruction, recording observations, and regularly conducting formative and summative evaluation conferences. 19. Identify, provide, and encourage professional growth among the campus staff; work jointly with teachers to develop and accomplish improvement goals. 20. Comply with District policies, state laws, and federal regulations affecting schools; ensure that evaluations clearly and accurately represent staff performance. Administration and Fiscal / Facilities Management 21. Develop budgets based upon documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs; allocate fiscal resources to achieve specific objectives. 22. Implement programs within budget limits; maintain fiscal control; and accurately report fiscal information. 23. Manage and supervise all school facilities effectively; efficiently supervise the campus to ensure clean, orderly, and safe buildings and grounds. 24. Effectively schedule activities and resources in order to accomplish campus goals; monitor the use, care, and replacement of capital equipment. Student Management 25. Work with faculty and students to develop a discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate. 26. Effectively develop and communicate guidelines for behavior and conduct to students, staff, and parents. 27. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that consequences for misconduct are applied equitably to all students in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. 28. Effectively conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning school and student issues, conveying both positive aspects of student behavior as well as areas for growth. 29. Review student data, initiate updates, and report accurate information; ensure accurate designation of codes related to withdrawn and active students. Professional Growth and Development 30. Use information and insights gained through professional development activities, the District appraisal process, and evaluative feedback from supervisors to improve performance. 31. Strive to improve leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities (i.e. undertaking professional reading, attending conferences, etc.). 32. Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics. School / Community Relations 33. Articulate the school’s mission and campus plan to the community and solicit their support in achieving the goals of the campus. 34. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs. 35. Demonstrate the use of appropriate techniques to encourage community and parent involvement; emphasize two-way communication between the school and community. 36. Project a positive image to the community. Other Duties 37. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise and evaluate the performance of staff assigned to the campus including assistant principal(s), teacher(s), counselor(s), librarian(s), instructional aides, clerical support staff, and custodians.
