Primary Accountabilities:

The Meter Technician I performs skilled and semiskilled electrical and mechanical work in the installation, testing, and maintenance of single and three-phase meters and meter related equipment.  This position may also provide assistance to the Meter Superintendent and assist other staff in areas that consist of construction, maintenance, and/or repair work on but not limited to meters and sewer stations on an as-needed bases. 

 

 Essential Functions:

  1. Adheres to safety practices and procedures, such as checking equipment regularly and erecting barriers around work areas.
  2. Tests conductors, according to electrical diagrams and specifications, to identify corresponding conductors and to prevent incorrect connections.
  3. Drives vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
  4. Identifies circuit breakers, fuses, transformers, relays, or wiring, using wiring diagrams and electrical-testing instruments.
  5. Assists with install, maintain, and repair of conduits, cables, wires, and related equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switches.
  6. Places insulating or waterproofing materials over conductors and joints.
  7. Installs watt-hour meters.
  8. Splices or solders cables together to customer service lines, or traffic light cabinets, using hand tools, epoxies, or specialized equipment.
  9. Inspects and tests equipment to locate and identify problems, using reading and testing instruments.
  10. Coordinates work assignment preparation and completion with other workers.
  11. Cleans, tins, and splices corresponding conductors by twisting ends together or by joining ends with metal clamps and soldering connections.
  12. Properly computes current transformer ratios required for accurate meter consumption.
  13. Interprets schematics, trouble shoot electronic controls, variable frequency drives and programmable logic controllers.
  14. Coordinates work assignment preparation and completion with other workers.
  15. After six months of training and completion of the skills test, employee will be eligible to take Track 1 from the Great Lakes Electric Meter School
  16. Will have to travel for training and educational activities
  17. Performs other duties, as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED), required.

Demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information and situations.

 

Physical Demands:

Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - hard hat, safety glasses, etc.

Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds and push/pull up to seventy-five (75) pounds.

Ability to stand, walk, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, squat or stoop for prolonged periods of time.

Ability to manipulate, reach outward and above the shoulders, climb, grasp, and speak, frequently.

Ability to operate a keyboard or ten (10) key.

Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus. Color vision in driving vehicles is required.

Acute hearing is required when working around traffic equipment.

 

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily outside in all types of weather conditions but may require tasks to be performed in an office environment.

May encounter serious hazards on the job, including working with low and high-voltage electricity.

Although most work is performed within scheduled hours, some irregular hours on evenings, weekends, and holidays may be necessary.

 

SAFETY SENSITIVE: This is a SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION.  A safety sensitive position is a job or position where the employee holding this position has the responsibility for his/her own safety or other people’s safety.  Lack of attention in a safety sensitive position can result in ana incident that adversely affects the health or safety of employees, contractors, the public, or the environment.  An employee has to be with clear mind and diligent while occupying this position.
