Lead Residential Counselor
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Program Manager, The Lead Residential Counselor’s primary responsibility is to provide case management that includes Domestic Violence education, advocacy, and trauma informed services to adults and children sheltered in the safe house and in hotels as appropriate. The Lead Residential Counselor will work as part of a team at the safe house as well as have oversight of daily shelter operations.
This position is 37.5 hours per week. The schedule is from 7am-3pm, Monday- Friday
Accountable and responsible for the following results:
- Oversight of day-to-day operations of safe house
- Complete all intakes and orient new residents and their children to the safe house. Collaborate with office staff regarding sheltering and transport of new clients.
- Provide Intensive case management and assist clients with developing goals while at the shelter. May assign additional case management duties to part time staff to provide uninterrupted support to the clients.
- Provide advocacy, crisis intervention, and referrals to appropriate services.
- Complete releases of information for all service providers involved.
- Maintain an active presence at the shelter, conduct periodic tours, and provide services that may include substance abuse recovery, relapse prevention, life skills training, health education, advocacy with other care providers (i.e.: police department, hospital, DSS, etc.).
- Coordinate team review meetings as necessary with DCF, SA providers, and any other providers identified by client.
- Provide transportation to clients as needed i.e. medical, shopping, educational programs, cultural activities, DSS, court dates.
- Schedule weekly appointments to provide counseling i.e. domestic violence, safety planning-advocacy and supportive services., initial appointment within 24 hours of admission.
- Document and maintain client records electronically and physically. Attend all regular supervision meetings with the Program Manager.
- Provide coverage for another safe house as assigned by Program Manager.
- Provide crisis line phone coverage when necessary and assist caller per program guidelines to include but not limited to general domestic violence information, referrals, safety planning, and screening for shelter both in and outside of area.
- Monitor petty cash and follow protocol for usage and reimbursement. Record bed nights for appropriate clients to initiate DSS billing for BHcare finance office.
- Check safety and conditions and cleanliness at safe house daily. Responsible for weekly house meetings, plan chore delegation, meals, and conflict resolution issues.
- Oversee shelter repairs in collaboration with BHcare maintenance department that includes the processing and completion of work orders and van maintenance.
- Responsible for household food inventory, review universal precautions with residents, and ensure safety boxes are adequately supplied.
- Attends training sessions, workshops, seminars as requested by supervisor, or as needed for professional development, or as required for accreditation or licensing.
- Required to use own vehicle on company business, or to transport clients.
- Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position
- May perform other assignments and duties as assigned.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred and two (2) years related work experience in human services; OR Associates degree and four (4) years related work experience in human services; OR High School diploma or equivalent and 8 years related work experience in human services. Substitution of appropriate college training is allowed but subject to funder’s approval,
- Two years Advocacy and/or direct service experience working with survivors of domestic violence in a community-based setting preferred.
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the certified domestic violence counselor per CGS 52-146k before providing direct service to clients, followed with six-hour recertification yearly.
- Strong Written Communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of clients.
- Crisis intervention and counseling skills preferred.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft 365. Must be able to navigate through electronic health records system (EHR).
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must maintain an acceptable driving record and be insurable at a reasonable rate under the Organization’s auto insurance plan.
LICENSURE /CERTIFICATIONS:
- Ability to obtain and maintain BLS certification
