Job Description: Surgical Tech Full Time 40 weekly hours, day shift Sign-On Bonus Eligible! Job Summary The Surgical Technician, under the guidance of the registered nurse and supervision of the lead tech, charge RN, Nurse Manager, and Director is responsible for the care of the patients by providing surgical instrumentation/supplies appropriate for the surgical/endoscopy procedure, and the provision of a sterile field for surgery. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for ensuring effective communication between him or herself, the charge nurse, the patient, other staff, physicians, and other hospital departments. The Surgical Technician ensures provision of safe, competent care to all patients/residents. Principal Duties and Responsibilities The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He/she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time. 1. Assessment and planning of caseload Demonstrates knowledge of all operative procedures, including appropriate draping, instrumentation and suture. Initiates proper scrub procedure allowing ample time for case set-up. Assists in setting up prior to procedure in accordance with surgeons’ preference card. Minimizes turnover by assisting in preparing for next case by cleaning the room, organizing and obtaining instruments, equipment, and any necessary supplies. Thorough knowledge of cleaning process for flexible endoscopes. Thorough knowledge of high-level disinfection process for flexible endoscopes. Knowledge of universal precautions 2. Implementation Demonstrates knowledge of and utilizes principles of aseptic technique including, but not limited to, gowning, gloving, sterilization and disinfecting. Assesses safety and safe mechanical condition of equipment and reports any malfunction. Follows departmental policy and procedure for the care and handling of surgical specimens. Follows departmental and system policy and procedure for performing surgical counts. Demonstrates knowledge of and utilizes principals of universal precautions. Properly disposes of sharps, i.e. needles, trocars, blades, etc. Expedites flow of case and room turnovers. Assists in proper cleaning, moving and storage of equipment. Exhibits constructive use of free time and completes special duties as assigned Assists in transferring and transporting patients. Demonstrates flexibility with schedule changes to meet the needs of the unit. Assists in SPD as needed; responsible for SPD when on call. Thorough knowledge of the decontamination process of soiled instruments, equipment, patient reusables. 3. Role Accountability Exhibits a professional image Assists in orientation of new personnel Maintains patient confidentiality. Adheres to AORN and AAMI standards, and system, hospital, and departmental policies. Requests inservices on equipment as necessary Demonstrates creative ideas in support and betterment of dept. Exemplifies versatility in a variety of OR specialties. Ensure all supplies needed for each assigned surgical procedure are available as indicated by preference card. Ensures all cases are pulled and prepared for the next days surgical procedures; alerting lead tech of any supplies, instrumentation or equipment that is not available as indicated on case cards immediately. Attend at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and all mandatory training sessions. Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required: Completion of Surgical Technician training program or employed as a scrub tech for a min of 1 year BCLS within 90 days of hire Communicate and work effectively with people Certified Endoscopy Tech within 6 months of hire PRN staff are exempt from this requirement Preferred: Thorough knowledge of nursing process Certified Scrub Technician Certified SPD Technician If you would like to be part of a growing family focused on supporting clinical excellence, teamwork and innovation, we urge you to apply now!
