JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision of administrative staff, is responsible for the development and improvement of special education services, and coordinating with other departments in providing leadership, development, and coordination of special education programs in schools.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Coordinates all special education programs in the district.
- Establishes procedures to process and place eligible pupils in special education classes.
- Analyzes and implements State and Federal guidelines and legal requirements governing special education.
- Implements curriculum and program planning.
- Keeps informed of the state of financial aid for special education.
- Writes State and Federal projects to secure funds.
- Develops budget recommendations and provide expenditure control on established budgets for special education.
- Conducts on-going needs assessment of special education needs through comprehensive survey programs for the continuous identification of exceptional children.
- Develops required and needed programs for students with mental disabilities and physical disabilities and for those pupils who are gifted through comprehensive planning.
- Evaluates effectiveness of all special education programs, facilities, curriculum, materials and supplies, parent relationships and recommend changes as needed.
- Contributes to the development of the total system philosophy of education.
- Works with the departments of elementary and secondary curriculum in the adoption of school policies to include special education needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s Degree or above in special education, with a GaPSC L-5 or higher certificate in educational leadership. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years successful experience in directing, supervising, and evaluating staff.
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work collaboratively with building leaders to implement and monitor special education programs
- Ability to work in a supportive, collaborative role with school district leaders, both at the central office and school level
- Ability to interface with other departments to coordinate reciprocal services for achieving department goals
- Ability to keep current of all federal and state mandates for special education services to ensure compliance
- Strong management, supervisory, and problem solving skills
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possess GaPSC certification in Special Education
Posses or be able to obtain GaPSC certification in Education Leadership at L-5 level or higher.
Salary/Terms/Benefits:
- 239 day work year
- Salary based on certification and experience; placement on the Adopted Salary Schedule.
